What's going on Saturday?

Bon Iver

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Bon Iver, yMusic @ Pioneer Works
Bon Iver’s experimental, heavily electronic new album 22, A Million is like nothing he’s done before, and it’s yet another excellent Bon Iver album in its very own way. Tonight he begins a run of TEN NYC-area shows, with various openers. This show’s got modern classical ensemble yMusic, whose members have worked with Justin Vernon before.

The Hold Steady @ Brooklyn Bowl
The Hold Steady wrap up their Boys and Girls In America run tonight, and we hear there’s a pretty special surprise opener. That opener is on at 9:15, so you might wanna get there on time.

ESCAPE-ISM, Shells, Tall Juan, People Like Us @ ALPHAVILLE
Ian Svenonius, of Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up and Chain & The Gang, performs solo under the ESCAPE-ISM moniker, using a mix of tape loops, cheap guitar and his boundless charisma and rock n’ roll cool.

The Magnetic Fields @ BAM
Stephin Merritt’s upcoming Magnetic Fields LP, 50 Song Memoir, features a song about every year from the first five decades of his life. These live shows (tonight is songs 26-50) feature musicians using 50 different instruments, keeping the theme going.

‘A Prairie Home Companion’ w/ Chris Thile, Corinne Bailey Rae, Marcus Mumford @ Town Hall
Chris Thile has put some pep in NPR’s  ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ since taking over as host, and it returns tonight for music and stories with Corinne Bailey Rae and Marcus Mumford.

Mannequin Pussy, Ian Sweet, Haybaby, Fern Mayo @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Bazaar bring shopping, eating, drinking and games all under one Greenpoint roof. Live music tonight includes rising Brooklyn band Ian Sweet.

Beth Orton @ Carnegie Hall
Beth Orton released Kidsticks, her most overtly electronic album to date, and toured North America earlier this year. This is one of just a couple East Coast she’s doing this month.

Lindstrom, Joakim (DJ Set), Barbie Bertisch @ Good Room
Norwegian dance music producer Lindstrøm, last in NYC with Todd Terje, spins tonight with Joakim.

Xeno & Oaklander, Kodacrome, Currency @ Rough Trade
Brooklyn-via-Berlin duo Xeno & Oaklander make icy synthpop like they did in 1981: with analog synths, sequencers and a tangle of patchcords.

Antietam, My Teenage Stride, Charles Bissel (of The Wrens) @ Union Hall
You can try and prod Charles Bissel for informantion on that long-in-the-works new Wrens album at this show that features his old pals Antietam and My Teenage Stride.

Reverend Horton Heat, Unknown Hinson, Nashville Pussy, Lucky Tubb @ Warsaw
Pschobilly great Reverend Horton Heat plays tonight with the equally raucous Nashville Pussy and a few other likeminded rabble-rousers.

Usher, Travis Scott, T.I., Young Thug, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, French Montana, Young M.A., Lil Yachty, Joey Bada$$, Jidenna, Kehlani @ Prudential Center
Hot 97’s ‘Hot for the Holidays’ show happens tonight, and the lineup is stacked with all kinds of good stuff, from veterans to rising newcomers, from classic-style rap to genre-bending innovators. It sounds like a fun night.

Young M.A, Kodie Shane, Asmara, The Skins, WcKids @ Knockdown Center
In addition to that Hot 97 show in Newark, you can also see Young M.A. in Queens tonight. The Brooklyn rapper has been one of the year’s biggest breakouts, and her song “OOOUUU” is a total hit.

Cyndi Lauper’s holiday show w/ Billy Corgan, Sharon Van Etten, Aloe Blacc, Big Thief, Oxymorrons, Grace VanderWaal, and more @ Beacon Theater
Cyndi Lauper does her annual holiday show tonight, and as usual, she’s got quite an eccentric cast of guests. There’s Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and the great singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten, plus soulful singer Aloe Blacc, indie rock up-and-comers Big Thief, alt-rappers Oxymorrons, talented 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal (called “the new Taylor Swift” by Simon Cowell), and more.

Rock Lottery 7 @ Knitting Factory
It’s the seventh annual Rock Lottery, which means 25 hand-picked musicians will gather early that Saturday morning, put their names in a hat which will then be drawn to form “bands” who then must write songs, rehearse and perform them that night. This year features members of The Roots, Hop Along, Girls Against Boys, Born Ruffians, Shearwater, and more.

Windhand, Ilsa @ Mercury Lounge
Windhand make melodic doom that’s often closer to heavy psychedelic rock than “metal,” but whatever you wanna call it, they rip. This is their first of two NYC shows this week with DC death metal crushers Ilsa.

Red Fang, Torche, Whores @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Speaking of metal bands that are really just closer to heavy rock, Music Hall of Williamsburg hosts three of them tonight. This is also the first of two NYC shows.

Horrendous, Kosmodemonic, Sentient Horror @ Saint Vitus
Okay now for some metal that’s more on the extreme side: Horrendous tap into classic-style death metal so well, that they sometimes rival their influences.

Rhyton, Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, Richard Papiercuts, Rathaus, surprise guest @ Union Pool
Union Pool hosts the John Allen & Tony Procaccino B-Day Bash tonight, which includes a handful of cool artists. If you dig trippy, psychedelic stuff, a lot of this lineup is for you.

Chick Corea @ Blue Note
Legendary jazz pianist, composer and 22-time Grammy Award winner Chick Corea turned 75 in June, and has been celebrating this milestone with a series of dates at The Blue Note Jazz Club.
