What's going on Saturday?

Julia Holter at Primavera Sound

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Feist @ Town Hall
Pleasure, Feist’s first album in 6 years, is the rawest and darkest thing she’s ever released and has her favoring ambition over sticking to a formula that already works. It’s got some of the best songs of her career, and seeing her perform these songs live should be really special. This is the first of three shows at NYC’s Town Hall.

Punk Rock Bowling
The two-day Asbury Park edition of the Punk Rock Bowling festival begins today and today’s lineup is pretty awesome, with ska vets The Specials, soul great Charles Bradley, melodic punk staples Dillinger Four, Boston punk vets The Explosion, and recent Canadian breakouts PUP, and more.

Miguel, BJ The Chicago Kid, Saro @ McCarren Park
Since 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, Miguel has mastered a mix of R&B, rock, pop, psychedelia, and more, and his truly powerful pipes make his live shows a treat.

Julia Holter (solo), Georgia, Emel Mathlouthi & Victoria Ruiz in conversation with Amy Rose Spiegel @ National Sawdust
This is The Creative Independent’s Northside showcase and the lineup is very interesting. Juia Holter is headlining with a rare solo set, and there’s also alt-pop musician Georgia and a conversation between Tunisian protest singer Emel Mathlouthi and Downtown Boys singer Victoria Ruiz, with writer Amy Rose Spiegel.

Big Thief, Twain, The Relatives, The Brother Brothers @ The Park Church Co-Op
This is the second of three upcoming Big Thief shows in NYC, two of which are this week (and part of Northside). Their new album Capacity came out yesterday and it’s really good stuff.

Samiam, Manalive, Suicide Pact @ Saint Vitus
Emo/punk vets Samiam haven’t released an album since 2011 and they don’t tour much these days, but their ’90s classics hold up really well and any (rare) chance to see them is very worth taking.

Destruction Unit, Pharmakon, Institute, Pop. 1280, The Hunt, Gary War @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Sacred Bones turned 10 this year, and this Northside showcase is the label’s second 10th anniversary show in NYC. Psychedelic punk greats Destruction Unit, who have one of the best live shows in underground rock right now, are headlining.

Martin Phillipps (of The Chills), Roger Shepherd (Flying Nun Records), Mike Sniper (Captured Tracks) @ Rough Trade
To promote his book on Flying Nun Records, label founder Roger Shepherd will be talking at Rough Trade this afternoon with Mike Sniper of Captured Tracks (who also distributes Flying Nun in the U.S.) and Chills frontman Martin Phillipps who will also perform a solo set. 2 PM.

!!! (chk chk chk), Underground System @ Bowery Ballroom
Maybe its the state of the world, but !!!’s sarcastic, politically aware funk-punk sounds pretty good right now, as does their new album Shake the Shudder. They celebrate its release tonight.

Lower Dens (performing ABBA: Gold), Tony Molina (performing Dinosaur Jr’s You’re Living All Over Me), Tredici Bacci (performing performing songs from Koji Kondo’s Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack) @ Rough Trade
Rough Trade on Saturday is once again hosting a night of interesting cover sets, presented by the 33 1/3 Series. Lower Dens are doing ABBA Gold; Tony Molina is doing Dinosaur Jr’s You’re Living All Over Me; and Tredici Bacci will perform selections from the Super Mario Brothers movie soundtrack.

The Dwarves, Decent Criminal, Surfbort @ The Bowery Electric
Garage punk lifers (and makers of the classic 1990 LP Blood Guts & Pussy on Sub Pop) are still going strong, having last released The Dwarves Invented Rock & Roll in 2014. Tonight should get nuts.

Aldous Harding, Happyness, Cones @ Baby’s All Right
New Zealand’s Aldous Harding recently released her 4AD debut Party, which was produced by PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish and features Perfume Genius on guest vocals. She just played an excellent set at the BV Northside show on Thursday, and plays another Nside show tonight.

Four Tet @ Analog BKNY
Electronic musician Four Tet often makes quiet music on his albums, but at his shows, he’s there to get the room dancing. Tonight should be a blast.

Chuck Ragan, Jared Hart @ Mercury Lounge
When he’s not co-fronting Hot Water Music, Chuck Ragan makes folk music with all the same ruggedness of his punk band. Opening tonight is another punk musician’s solo folk project, The Scandals’ Jared Hart.

Timber Timbre, Ohtis @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Canadian noir-pop group Timber Timbre returned this year with Sincerely, Future Pollution. This Northside show is sold out, but if you’ve got a badge, you can try to show up early and get in.

Slaughter Beach, Dog (Jake from Modern Baseball), Active Bird Community, Casper Skulls, Partner, PONY @ Baby’s All Right
While Modern Baseball remain on hiatus, co-frontman Jake Ewald is staying busy with his solo project Slaughter Beach, Dog, whose music isn’t too far removed from MoBo. Today he’s playing an afternoon solo set at Baby’s.

Future Punx, Eaters, Heaven’s Gate, Bodega, PC Worship, A. Savage @ ALPHAVILLE
Parquet Courts’ Andrew Savage plays solo as part of his label Dull Tool’s showcase at Alphaville on Friday night, that also features Future Punx, Eaters, Heaven’s Gate, and more.

The Sun Ra Arkestra @ Union Pool (Summer Thunder)
Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series continues today with the awesome Sun Ra Arkestra. Festivities start at 2 PM.

Jurassic 5, Shaheed, DJ Supreme, Porchlite @ Brooklyn Steel
Veteran alternative Los Angeles hip hop crew Jurassic 5, who reformed in 2013, toured in 2014 and have played sporadic shows since, hit Brooklyn tonight.

Nick Lowe, Kat Edmondson @ City Winery
Ace songwriter, gifted producer and general diamond geezer, Nick Lowe has as many great stories as he has great songs. (A lot.) Expect both tonight.

House of Feelings Northside party w/ Dave Harrington’s Merry Pranksters, House of Feelings live band, Psymon Spine, Matt FX (DJ sets throughout)
House of Feelings is no longer just a party but also a live band, and their original music can often be as fun as the stuff they like to spin. Tonight they’re doing a late-night Northside party at Baby’s (midnight start).

OSHUN @ Kinfolk Studios
Neo-soul/hip hop group OSHUN are one of the best live bands in NYC right now, with a sound and performance so professional that it’s hard to believe they aren’t more popular.

Alice Smith, Bilal, Kris Bowers @ Prospect Park Bandshell
The free BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival shows in Prospect Park continue tonight. Alice Smith is headlining, and if you’re going, it’s worth catching neo-soul great Bilal too.

Brooklyn Pride Fest
Today is Brooklyn Pride Day and the 21st annual festival happens today in Park Slope on Fifth Avenue from First to Ninth Streets. Festivities culminate at 7:30 PM with the Twilight Pride Parade which happens on Fifth Avenue from Lincoln Place to Ninth Street.
