What’s going on Saturday?
Afropunk Fest @ Commodore Barry Park
It’s day one of the stacked two-day Afropunk festival in Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park, and today’s highlights include a (relatively) rare must-see set by Solange, SZA who’s been riding high off the strength of her recent debut album, Sampha (ditto), veterans like Soul II Soul and Macy Gray, and other cool stuff like Thundercat, serpentwithfeet, Sinkane, Little Simz, Pure Disgust, KING, Jojo Abot, Princess Nokia, Leikeli47, Shelter DJs, B L A C K I E, and more.
Anderson .Paak (host), Q-Tip (DJ), Natasha Diggs (DJ), The Twilite Tone (DJ) @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
While in town for Afropunk, Anderson .Paak hosts this ‘Soul in the Horn’ party which has some pretty cool DJs on board.
Afropunk After Dark
You can keep the Afropunk party going with a host of After Dark events, including tonight’s Fancy Dress Ball. There are unofficial afterparties as well, like Pete Rock DJing at Output.
Trapped Under Ice, Fury, Freedom, Firewalker, Super Natural Psycho @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Hardcore faves Trapped Under Ice returned this year with Heatwave, their first album in six years, and it not only picks up where they left off but it’s also a step forward. See their absolutely crushing live show (with great openers) tonight.
Gogol Bordello, Dave Hause & the Mermaid @ The Capitol Theatre
Gypsy punks Gogol Bordello just released their seventh album Seekers and Finders (which features Regina Spektor on a song) yesterday, and tonight they celebrate with a show just outside of NYC. If you’re coming from NYC, you can take the shuttle to the Cap from Rough Trade (but you had to pre-order the new album at Rough Trade to do that). Don’t miss opener Dave Hause.
DJDS, Actress, Show Me the Body, RP Boo, Yves Tumor, Umfang @ MoMA PS1 (Warm Up)
Warm Up has been having as a good a summer for rap as for electronic music this year, and today that continues with punk-rap group Show Me the Body, who are on a lineup otherwise filled with quality DJs.
Actress (DJ), DJ Marfox, Via App, Studio OST @ Good Room
After Warm Up, Actress, who released AZD earlier this year, plays this late-night show at Good Room.
Gary Clark Jr, Michael Kiwanuka @ Stone Pony Summer Stage
Modern blues guitarist (and Eric Clapton collaborator) Gary Clark Jr teams with modern soul great Michael Kiwanuka for this NJ show before they both play Brooklyn’s Afropunk tomorrow.
Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, The Edgar Winter Band @ Jones Beach
Deep Purple and Alice Cooper, two bands that are both staples of classic rock radio but also highly influential on heavy metal, are currently on a co-headlining tour with veteran blues rockers The Edgar Winter Band opening. The tour hits Jones beach tonight and NJ on Monday.
Showtime Goma @ Garden Bar
You may know Jen Goma from A Sunny Day in Glasgow or Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but she just put out her first solo album as Showtime Goma which leans nu-pop and showcases her powerful pipes. Her live show is on the theatrical side and a lot of fun — tonight’s show is free. 6:30 PM.
NY Night Train Rock ‘N’ Roller Skate Ball @ Knockdown Center
The cavernous Knockdown Center seems perfect for rollerskating, and add to that the good time rock n’ roll vibe of Jonathan Toubin’s NY Night Train, this should be something else. You can skate from room to room and there are DJs and a whole bunch of live bands, including Philly’s The Tough Shits, Tower, Jonny Couch, Chorizo and more.
The Sonics, Flat Duo Jets, The Fleshtones @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
Another fun rock n’ roll event tonight is this killer triple bill of veterans, headlined by Seattle proto-punk great The Sonics, with support from NYC super-rock greats The Fleshtones, and NC rockabilly true-believers Flat Duo Jets. All on a boat.
Flamin’ Groovies, Baby Shakes @ Rough Trade
There’s a whole lotta shakin’ going on at this show between classic power pop band Flamin’ Groovies (“Shake Some Action) and openers Baby Shakes.
Tyvek, Foster Care, Stallone The Reducer @ Union Pool (Summer Thunder)
Noooo! It’s the last Summer Thunder of the season, but Union Pool’s free series is going out strong with Detroit’s arty garage-punks Tyvek, plus Brooklyn’s super-underrated Foster Care, and more. 2 PM start.
Asbury Park Surf Music Festival
It’s an all-day celebration of the twangy, twisting sound of surf rock, right by the beach, headlined by the great Los Straitjackets.
The Shacks, Ritual Talk, The Human Fly @ Cape House
Local band The Shacks are on soul label Big Crown but they’ve got a sound that’s closer to something like Mazzy Star than to most of their labelmates.
