Converge, Give @ Saint Vitus
Converge have been making boundary-pushing metallic hardcore for over two decades, and this year’s The Dusk In Us rivals just about any of their classics. They’re playing two sold-out shows at Saint Vitus this weekend, which is a very intimate place to see them these days.
Cyndi Lauper’s holiday show w/ Laura Jane Grace, Peaches, Jake Shears, Dr. John, Jackson Browne, Bridget Everett, Sandra Bernhard, Ani DiFranco @ Beacon Theatre
Every year, Cyndi Lauper throws a holiday show at Beacon Theatre and she brings in guests from all different styles of music for a very unique and fun night. This year she has Against Me!’s Laura Jane Graces, the always-provocative Peaches, Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, New Orleans legend Dr. John, and still many more.
A Tribute to Brainiac @ The Bell House
Ohio experimental punks Brainiac were one of the fiercest live acts of the ’90s, and were poised for bigger things when frontman Tim Taylor was tragically killed in a car accident. To mark the 20th anniversary of Taylor’s death, a whole bunch of contemporaries will pay tribute, including members of Girls Against Boys, Les Savy Fav, Hella, Delta 72, The Wrens, Brainiac, Dismemberment Plan, Chrome Cranks and Hole. GVSB will do their own set, as will SAVAK. This should be something.
Chris Thile, Bon Iver, Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn @ Town Hall
While they haven’t decided on what new name to give A Prairie Home Companion following the firing of creator/producer Garrison Keillor, the show goes on with Bon Iver and more joining host Chris Thile.
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Sad13 @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Ted Leo released Hanged Man, his first album in seven years, earlier this year and has been on the road since with the Pharmacists. He wraps up that tour with two Brooklyn shows, tonight being the first.
Boss Hog, D’NT @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
Cristina Martinez and Jon Spencer brought back Boss Hog and made the enjoyably revved-up Brood X, their first album in 17 years. They play tonight with duo D’NT who are celebrating the release of their new album,
Beck @ Spring Studios
Beck, whose new album Colors is quite possibly his most overtly pop record to date, plays this very intimate show that is an exclusive for Hilton Honors Program members
Tanya Tagaq, Jeffrey Zeigler @ National Sawdust
Part of National Sawdust’s “Winterreise Nights” series, the Polaris Prize winner and Inouk throat-singer Tanya Tagaq teams with Jeffrey Zeigler, Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto) and Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle).
Hess Is More @ The Mailroom at WeWork Wall Street
Mikkel Hess celebrate the release of his new album, 80 Years, tonight with this free show. His eight-piece band are really something, and fans of jazz or LCD Soundsystem should find something to love.
Chris Rock @ Barclays Center
Chris Rock has been in the midst of a comeback year, which has recorded his ongoing first tour in nine years. He played two BAM shows recently, where he taped a forthcoming Netflix special, and tonight he wraps up another NYC run at the big Barclays Center.
Hatebreed, Dying Fetus, Code Orange @ Starland Ballroom
Say what you will about their later material, but metalcore veterans Hatebreed’s 1997 debut Satisfatction is the Death of Desire holds up very well, and that’s the album that they’re celebrating on this 20th anniversary tour. (They’re also celebrating the 15th anniversary of their 2002 sophomore album/major label debut, Perseverance.) Killer openers too: death metal vets Dying Fetus and young hardcore band Code Orange, whose 2017 album Forever has gotten tons of acclaim (and Grammy nominations).
Vagabon, Cende, Radiator Hospital @ Bowery Ballroom
Indie rockers Vagabon released their debut album Infinite Worlds this year to much acclaim, and they wrap up this breakout year with their largest headlining NYC show yet tonight. If you’re going, be sure to show up early for Radiator Hospital, whose latest album Radiator Hospital Play The Songs You Like dropped this past October.
Pile, Bad History Month, Paper Castles, Yazan @ Market Hotel
Modern-day heroes of Boston’s underground rock scene, Pile returned this year with their new album A Hairshirt of Purpose. They open for Converge at Vitus tomorrow, but first they play their own show at Market Hotel tonight.
Bitchin Bajas, Ka Baird, Sikk Laffter @ The Park Church Co-Op
Psychedelic drone/ambient duo Bitchin Bajas returned this year with their new album Bajas Fresh on Drag City. Tonight they play a church in Brooklyn.
The Bouncing Souls, T.S.O.L., Blanks 77 @ White Eagle Hall
Jersey punk heroes The Bouncing Souls and West Coast horror punk greats TSOL are playing a few Northeast shows together this week. This is the final one.
Future Punx, Tough Age, Bodega, DJ Kevin @ The Glove
Toronto’s Tough Age are the out-of-towners on this bill of local mutant pop and punk
Nublu Jazz Festival
The Nublu Jazz Festival continues today with three shows at NYC venue Nublu. The 8 PM show has the great Vijay Iyer, who remains super active and released the Far from Over album this year. The 10 PM show has Eddie Henderson, who was a member of Herbie Hancock’s band in the ’70s. And the midnight show has Darkside member Dave Harrintgon playing with his Merry Pranksters band, which usually includes exciting guests.
Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, The Budos Band @ Capitol Theatre
Soul/rock band Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats return to the NYC-area tonight, and opening is instrumental jazz/funk-turned-sorta-proto-metal band Budos Band.
SWMRS, The Interrupters, The Regrettes, Mt. Eddy @ Irving Plaza
If you miss the kind of poppy punk that was big in the ’90s and early ’00s, you’ll probably like the bands on this bill. SWMRS and Mt. Eddy both count sons of Billie Joe Armstrong as members, The Interrupters work with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong and don’t sound miles away from his band, and The Regrettes are also somewhere in the Epitaph/Fat/Lookout! realm.
Hot Tuna Electric ft. Steve Kimock @ The Paramount
Having recently played some acoustic shows in NYC, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady bring Hot Tuna just outside of the city tonight for an electric show featuring Steve Kimock.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss is currently in the midst of his completely sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through June! At these shows, Bruce plans to give fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
It’s also SantaCon today so…you’ve been warned.
