What's going on Saturday?

Sacred Bones 10 Year Anniversary - Red Bull Music Academy
Psychic Ills @ Sacred Bones 10 Year Anniversary (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Yo La Tengo @ Bowery Ballroom
Yo La Tengo’s annual Hanukkah run shows at Maxwell’s in Hoboken were the stuff of legend. Surprise openers! Comedians! Special mix CDs every night! Five years later, Yo La Tengo have brought Hanukkah shows back, now at Bowery Ballroom. It’s Night 5 — who do you think will be tonight’s opener comedian and encore guest?

Chorizo, Ice Balloons, Slam Section @ Ceremony
Ice Balloons is one of the side projects of TV on the Radio’s Kyp Mallone, where he definitely shows his wild, freaky side. Chorizo is the new band from OJ of XRay Eyeballs and Golden Triangle.

Tyondai Braxton, Like a Villain @ Issue Project Room
It’s BOMB Magazine’s year-end party, and also marks the close of ISSUE Project Room’s 2017 season, with the former Battles member Tyondai Braxton performing a solo set. Like a Villian (extended technique vocalist Holland Andrews) performs as well.

Chris Thile, Jeff Tweedy, The Staves, yMusic, Punch Brothers, Tom Papa @ Town Hall
“The Show with Chris Thile” (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion) welcomes Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, and more for the last of the show’s live broadcasts this year at Town Hall.

The Front Bottoms’ Champagne Jam w/ AJJ, The Districts, White Reaper, Delicate Steve, American Trappist, Slaughter Beach Dog, Big Easy, Weakened Friends, Strange Eclipse @ Asbury Park Convention Hall
NJ folk/pop punk faves The Front Bottoms always celebrate the holidays with their big one-day festival Champagne Jam. Usually it’s in NYC, but this year it’s in their home state.

Kevin Devine, Petal @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Kevin Devine is playing two special Brooklyn shows this week. This is the second, and it’ll have him playing last year’s Instigator and 2006’s Put Your Ghost to Rest with a full band. Both shows have different great openers, and this one has Petal who are prepping their new album for a release on Run For Cover next year.

Taking Back Sunday, The Maine, Modern Chemistry @ Starland Ballroom
It’s not the holidays without Taking Back Sunday’s annual holiday shows at NJ’s Starland Ballroom, which go down this weekend. This is the second of two, and the band’s pop-up shop/acoustic set also happens at Starland this afternoon.

Psychic Ills, Mike Bones @ Union Pool
NYC duo Psychic Ills treck the same droney path that Spacemen 3 did 30 years ago, bringing their own moody spin to the journey.

Black Marble, Xarah Dion, YOU @ Market Hotel
The electronic pseudonym of Chris Stewart, Black Marble make superior, very catchy goth-tinged synthpop.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss is currently in the midst of his completely sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through June! At these shows, Bruce plans to give fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

A Murray Little Christmas starring Murray Hill, Bridget Everett, Angie Pontani @ Joe’s Pub
Borsht belt drag comedian Murray Hill hosts his annual “A Murray Little Christmas” with bawdy comedian Bridget Everett and more tonight.

Sheer Terror, Lion’s Cage @ The Kingsland
NYHC vets Sheer Terror still put on totally crushing shows in their hometown, and this one at new-ish venue The Kingsland should be no different.

Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Sugarman 3, The Shacks @ Brooklyn Bowl
Storied soul singer Lee Fields returned last year with the great Special Night, and this weekend he does two nights at Brooklyn Bowl (this is the second). Both openers are worth catching too.

LEVIZALOOZA w/ Krallice, Woe, Anicon, Geryon, Pyrolatrous @ Matchless
Lev Weinstein is playing with all five of his bands tonight in “tag team format” with “no set lists, no band order, no mercy.” Krallice, Woe, and Pyrolatrous all released great new albums this year, and Anicon and Geryon put their debut LPs out last year.

The Sun Ra Arkestra @ Nublu
The Sun Ra Arkestra includes some musicians who played with the late jazz legend Sun Ra back in the day, and they put on super high-energy shows performing his music. Tonight they play two shows as part of Nublu Jazz Festival.

Statik Selektah & friends with live band @ Blue Note
The great rap producer Statik Selektah just released his very solid new album 8, which featured a live band, and tonight he plays NYC with a live band too.

Justin Vivian Bond: Manger Danger! Jesus as a Weapon and a Tool @ Joe’s Pub
Right after Murray, Justin Vivian Bond’s unique Christmas show continues its run at Joe’s Pub. What is this show all about? We’ll let Justin do the talking: “I think I’m in LOVE with JESUS but it’s difficult because a lot of HIS FOLLOWERS totally HATE ME. (I know, the irony is not lost on me either) Anyway, I’m confused because I’m fully committed to bringing down the patriarchy but I’M TOTALLY CRUSHED OUT ON THE SON OF GOD! Please forgive me for co-opting your holiday to work it out publicly in my new show ‘Manger Danger! Jesus as a Weapon and a Tool.’”
