What’s going on Sunday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The War on Drugs, The Building @ Brooklyn Steel
The War On Drugs are basically the leaders of indie heartland rock right now, and with last year’s major label debut under their belt, they’re bigger than ever. Brooklyn Steel is actually on the smaller side for them these days, and not surprisingly, it’s sold out.

Superchunk, Swearin’ @ The Bowery Ballroom
Indie vets Superchunk recently released their new album What A Time To Be Alive, which is cut from a similar cloth as their early ’90s classics and rips just as hard. They’re now bringing their airtight live show on the road, playing a mix of new songs and old faves, and opening is the great newer band Swearin’, who are back from hiatus and who pair very well with Superchunk. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows together this weekend.

Tim Kinsella, The Dreebs @ C’mon Everybody
The ridiculously prolific Tim Kinsella is releasing a new album with his band Joan of Arc this year, and while we wait for that, he plays a solo show in NYC tonight. Maybe he’ll play some new songs?

Broken Social Scene, The Belle Game @Broken Social Scene, The Belle Game @ The Wellmont Theater
After ending a hiatus, Broken Social Scene released their first album in seven years, 2017’s great Hug of Thunder, and it not only sounds like classic BSS but it’s their most accessible record yet. Tonight’s their second of two NYC-area shows this weekend, presented by BrooklynVegan.

Burn, Primitive Weapons, Rough Francis @ Rocks Off Cruise
NYHC greats Burn returned last year with their Kurt Ballou-produced Do or Die LP on Deathwish, technically their first full length after releasing four EPs over the course of 27 years. Tonight they go on a hometown cruise, with two well-matched openers.

Sasha Go Hard, Cozy Craig, Keith Savage, SRRMN @ H0L0
Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard lives up to her name, and you can see her in action tonight.

Pinkish Black, Netherlands, Blacksage, Motor Teresa @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
Gothy, experimental heavy band Pinkish Black are still supporting 2015’s very solid Bottom of the Morning, and they return to NYC tonight.

Air Waves (record release), Mas Ysa, Robert Earl Thomas @ Baby’s All Right
Nicole Schneit has been making spare pop as Air Waves for a decade now. Her new album, Warrior, breaks away a little from the more straight-up, strummy guitar sound of her terrific first two albums. Drum machines, keyboards, and other instruments all come into play here but she uses them much as she does a guitar — lightly — in a style not dissimilar to Magnetic Fields in the 1990s.

Glasser, Roddy Bottum (of Faith No More), Brian Chase (of YYYs), Shelley Hirsch, KATIEE, Nick Hallett, Daisy Press, Dan Friel, Jessica Pavone @ The Bell House
This all-day event is called “Experiment in Opera Family Reunion” with family-friendly sets from 4-6, and it then turns 21+ after that. The evening has some pretty exciting performers, including Roddy Bottum and Glasser.

Mike Birbiglia, Jacqueline Novak, Chris Laker @ Union Hall
While he call sell out places like BAM, Mike Birbiglia still like to play small rooms and test out new material. This this show which is, unsurprisingly, sold out.

Milk ‘n’ Cookies, Baby Shakes @ Rough Trade
Legendary ’70s cult “wimp rock” band Milk N Cookies could be seen as the originators of the sound nearly every band on Burger Records is trying to ape.
