CIV

What's going on Sunday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Cro-Mags, CIV, Sheer Terror, Wisdom In Chains, Nine Lives, Extinction AD @ Highline Ballroom
This is a show with a great lineup for a great cause. It’s a benefit for Alexander Owens, a three-year old battling cancer who Cro-Mags frontman John Joseph is also running a race in Hawaii to raise money for. And it’s loaded with NYHC royalty. Cro-Mags and Sheer Terror are just about as OG as it gets, and they’re still worth seeing today. At least as exciting is CIV, Anthony Civarelli’s post-Gorilla Biscuits band whose shows are pretty rare these days. If you like punk/hc at all, this is a tough show to pass up.

Sheer Agony, Heavy Birds @ Fulton Stall Market
Smorgasburg’s South Street Seaport location opens this weekend and in celebration they’re having bands through the holiday. Today features Montreal’s Sheer Agony.

Ex-Cult, Dion Lunadon @ Mercury Lounge
Memphis punks Ex Cult clearly like coming to NYC during Memorial Day Weekend — they did the same thing two years ago. With killer new single “Stick the Knife In” out now, they’re here for two shows, tonight be the second and with A Place to Bury Strangers’ bassist Dion Lunadon.

King Missile, John S. Hall & Dogbowl @ Cake Shop
NYC vets King Missile, fronted by the funny and abstract John S. Hall, come out of hibernation every once and while and are always worth catching.

Wireheads, Big Bliss, Old Table, Suckling @ Silent Barn
Adelaide, Australia’s Wireheads make a brand of indie rock that seems particular to their country: boozy and unhinged, sometimes dissonant and shouty, sometimes twangy, with a drony violin pulling a through-line. Tonight’s their third of three NYC shows.

NY Night Train Sunday Soul Scream ft. Jonathan Toubin, Josh Styles (of Daddy Long Legs – DJ Set), Leah Beth (of PMS and the Mood Swings – DJ Set), Mikey Tashjian (of Rebel Rouser – DJ Set) @ Our Wicked Lady
You don’t have to work tomorrow (hopefully), so party it up with Jonathan Toubin tonight.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed today, the last of this long run.

Phil Lesh & Friends @ Capitol Theatre
Keep the Grateful Dead mania going all weekend with Phil Lesh & Friend’s three-night run at the Capitol Theatre. All three shows are with frequent Phil Lesh & Friends member Warren Haynes (Allman Bros, Gov’t Mule) on guitar/vocals and he’s always one of Phil’s best collaborators. Like last night, tonight’s show has longtime Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals will be playing with Phil Lesh & Friends for the first time ever.

The Arcs @ Surf Lodge
It’s the first weekend of free shows at Montauk restaurant/hotel/vacation spot The Surf Lodge, which is probably a pretty nice place to spend your Memorial Day Weekend if you’re looking to get out of NYC. Today’s show is a chance to see Dan Auerbach play a much smaller location than he usually does with The Black Keys.

We’ve put together a Memorial Day Weekend concert guide if you need other show suggestions.
