What's going on Sunday?

Baby Dee
Baby Dee

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Baby Dee @ National Sawdust
Transgender performance artist, multi-instrumentalist, classically trained harpist and onetime circus sideshow performer Baby Dee, who has collaborated with Antony, Andrew WK, Current 93, Will Oldham and more, is retiring from the stage — tonight is her final performance. Called Baby Dee’s Big Swan song, the show also features performances by Aimee Curl, Sarah Alden & Rima Fand, and Lacy Rose & Alaina Ferris doing Baby Dee songs, plus Dorit Chrysler on theremin. “Come say goodbye and hear her sing about predestination, elevator guys, manic depressive snowmen, and disgruntled reindeer.”

The Get Up Kids, Active Bird Community, Retirement Party @ Rough Trade
BrooklynVegan is proudly presenting this two-night New Year’s run from The Get Up Kids, who returned this year with their first release in seven years (and first for Polyvinyl), the Kicker EP, which is a very welcome return to their ’90s sound. They’re playing Rough Trade tonight and New Year’s Eve.

Phish @ MSG
It’s a New Year’s tradition for Phish to do a multi-night run at Madison Square Garden leading up to New Year’s Eve, and this year’s edition of that tradition continues tonight (this is night 3). By the end of the run, Phish will have played the Garden a total of 60 times.

Hop Along, Diet Cig @ Asbury Lanes
Hop Along returned this year with the great Bark Your Head Off, Dog, and they’re wrapping up the year with New Year’s shows in Asbury Park tonight and NYE.

Thursday, Vinnie Caruana @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Instead of their usual home state holiday show, NJ post-hardcore vets Thursday are spending the holidays in Brooklyn this year with a four-night run at Music Hall of Williamsburg. They’re playing Full Collapse in full on nights one and two, and War All The Time in full on nights two and four. Shoegazy locals Weekend open nights one and two, and The Movielife frontman Vinnie Caruana opens nights three and four. This is night four.

Handsome Dick Manitoba and The Wanderers, The Nuclears, Cody Melville Band @ The Bowery Electric
Like he does every year, Dictators vocalist and original member Handsome Dick Manitoba is doing a New Year’s weekend show. Tonight he’s promising the music of The Dictators, Manitobas Wild Kingdom, and songs from HDM’s new unreleased album.

Ghostface Killah @ The Paramount
Wu-Tang have had a super busy year and they’ll be busy next year too with some 36th Chambers anniversary shows, but first Ghostface is taking the time to do a solo tour, and this is the second of two NYC-area shows on it.

Masta Ace & Marco Polo, the Finisher Mister Cee @ Knitting Factory
Highly influential rap vet Masta Ace recently released a new album with producer Marco Polo, A Breukelen Story, and the duo is celebrating with this show tonight.

Oteil & Friends featuring Oteil Burbridge, Melvin Seals, Eric Krasno, John Kadlecik, Jay Lane, & Jennifer Hartswick @ Brooklyn Bowl
Oteil Burbridge is busy as a member of Dead & Company these days, but this week he’s taking the time to do a run of NYC-area shows as a bandleader, and he’s got some seriously impressive guests.

The Lone Bellow, Courtney Marie Andrews @ Bowery Ballroom
The Lone Bellow are doing a series of intimate shows with “new renditions of old songs, new renditions of new songs, other people’s songs…all the songs,” and if you’re going, we especially recommend catching alt-country singer Courtney Marie Andrews, who released the great May Your Kindness Remain earlier this year. This is night two of the three-night NYC run on the tour.

Macy Gray @ Iridium
Like she did last year, Macy Gray is playing four New Years shows across two night at Iridium.
NRBQ @ Murmrr Theatre
Terry Adams is the only remaining original member, but the “world’s greatest bar band” still have a great catalog of under-appreciated pop gems to choose from.

Sandra Bernhard: “Quick Sand” @ Joe’s Pub
Sandra Bernhard is playing Joe’s Pub through New Year’s Eve, a show she’s calling “Quick Sand” that is a “mélange of musings, music and whimsy.”
