Cat Power, Arsun @ Webster Hall
Cat Power is still riding high off last year’s solid Wanderer, and she’ll bring those dazzling songs to Webster Hall tonight, accompanied by nostalgia-tinged folk songwriter Arsun.
Lizzo, Ari Lennox @ Radio City Music Hall
Even if you’re not a pop music fan, there’s a strong chance you’ve heard of Lizzo constantly this year, due to her successful debut LP Cuz I Love You, whose single “Truth Hurts” just hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This Radio City show is her largest NYC show to date, and she’ll get help from DC-based R&B singer Ari Lennox.
Sea.Hear.Now Festival @ Asbury Park
Asbury Park, NJ’s two-day Sea.Hear.Now Festival concludes tonight, and while today’s lineup isn’t quite as exciting as yesterday’s, there’s still a lot of acts worth your time, including Dave Matthews Band, The B-52’s, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Jade Bird, Steel Pulse, The Wrecks, and more.
Mad Decent’s Higher Ground @ Avant Gardner
Mad Decent’s latest NYC party takes place at Avant Gardener tonight, which features label founder Diplo, alongside other acts including Walker & Royce, Paul Woolford, Thugfucker, and tons more.
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts @ Bergen Performing Arts Center
After playing Asbury Park’s Sea.Hear.Now Festival yesterday, the legendary Joan Jett plays her second consecutive NJ show, which should be more exciting in a headlining context.
Laura Carbone, The Natvral, Jared Artaud @ Baby’s All Right
Berlin-based singer-songwriter Laura Carbone has collaborated with Kip Berman (Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Natvral) before, and we should get some of that live tonight.
Madonna @ BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music
Madonna’s Madame X tour has begun with a 17-show run at BAM, some of the most intimate shows of her career. The show is heavy on her new album but it’s a rare chance to get up close and personal with Madge.
Black Moth Super Rainbow, Beans @ Brooklyn Bowl
Electronic psych group Black Moth Super Rainbow have been making wigged out, hazy pop for a decade and a half, and live shows add an equally trippy light show to the mix.
Shonen Knife, Straw Pipes, Brower @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Japanese cult punks Shonen Knife are already impressive based on their prolific discography alone (this year’s Sweet Candy Power is their 19th LP overall), and their live show should be equally stunning.
Supersuckers, The Hangmen @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
Supersuckers have been putting out quality cowpunk, garage rock and more since the early ’90s, mostly recently on last year’s succinctly titled Suck It.
David Cross @ Union Hall
David Cross tested out the stand-up material that became the 2018 Oh Come On tour at a bunch of shows he called “Shootin’ the Shit, Seein’ What Sticks” that mostly happened at Brooklyn’s Union Hall. He’s shooting the shit again with another series of shows.
Chris Brokaw, Bill Nace @ Union Pool
Chris Brokaw is mostly known for his work in a pair of bands, Come and Codeine, but he’s also a solid songwriter on his own, and tonight he’ll be joined at Union Pool by experimental musician and one half of Body/Head, Bill Nace.
Immolation, Blood Incantation @ Dingbatz
Yonkers death metal vets Immolation are playing some hometown-area shows this weekend, and opening all of them is the very promising up-and-coming death metal band Blood Incantation, who just announced their sophomore record earlier this week.
The Toasters, Samurai Pizza Cats, Flak Jacket, Go Big @ Amityville Music Hall
NYC ska vets The Toasters never seem to slow down. They’ve been doing tons of touring this year, and they’ll hit Long Island tonight.
Clowns, Moral Panic, Rpllnt @ The Kingsland
Melbourne punks Clowns recently released their first album for Fat Wreck Chords, Nature / Nurture, and it’s a very solid blend of classic punk n’ roll with hardcore aggression and just the right amount of melody. Fans of The Bronx and Single Mothers, take note.
