Caroline Polachek, True Blue* @ Bowery Ballroom
Former Chairlift frontwoman Caroline Polachek released her ’80s-inspired, synthy debut solo LP Pang last week, and she’ll play this one-off “presentation” of the album tonight. She’s always had a flair for theatricality, who knows what she’s got in store?
David Byrne’s American Utopia @ Hudson Theatre
David Byrne has retooled his acclaimed “untethered” 2018 for the Broadway stage and while the setlist and arrangements are much like what they were on his tour, songs are now threaded together with new monologues from Byrne, making for a much more theatrical experience.
Of Montreal, Locate S,1, Godcaster @ The Bell House
Speaking of theatrical artists, Of Montreal seem to be constantly busy on the road, and their latest stop in NYC features help from occasional collaborator Locate S,1 and fellow psych-weirdos Godcaster.
Laraaji @ National Sawdust (two shows)
Ambient pioneer Laraaji returns to NYC for two shows at National Sawdust, performing “Sun Piano,” a unique setlist consisting of mostly piano-based works. He’ll be joined by past collaborator and sound healer Arji OceAnanda.
Liam Gallagher @ Rough Trade (signing)
Liam Gallagher’s latest solo LP Why Me? Why Not. retains many of the hallmark musical qualities that defined his time in Oasis, and he’ll be signing copies of the new album in Brooklyn.
Carnivore A.D. @ The Kingsland
Carnivore A.D. used to include Carnivore members Marc Carnivore and Louie Beato with a new singer (RIP Peter Steele), though Marc and Louie actually no longer appear to be in the band, making Carnivore A.D. even more of a tribute act than they already were. Though we have to admit — after watching YouTube videos — they are a good tribute band
Robert Glasper: J Dilla Tribute feat T3 of Slum Village & More @ Blue Note (two shows)
Jazz/hip hop blender continues his month-long residency at the Blue Note Jazz Club, and tonight’s shows are part of an especially cool run, where he’ll be paying tribute to the late, great J Dilla with help from Dilla’s former Slum Village groupmate T3. Don’t be surprised if there are surprise guests, either.
Bad Bunny @ Prudential Center
2019 has been Bad Bunny’s biggest year yet. He put out his great debut album X 100PRE at the tail end of 2018, and he kept the momentum going with his collaborative album with J Balvin this past summer. He takes on Newark’s Prudential Center tonight.
