You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Movielife, Somerset Thrower, Victory Garden, Sharkswimmer @ Rough Trade
Long-running Long Island punks The Movielife are playing this BrooklynVegan-presented headlining show at Rough Trade to close out 2019. The band is promising lots of surprises and deep cuts, saying, “Gonna play a few that you never thought you’d see us play again. Joined by some amazing bands and friends, it’s gonna be a special night.”

Yo La Tengo @ Bowery Ballroom *
Yo La Tengo wrap up the 2019 edition of their Hanukkah run tonight. As with the previous seven nights, there will be surprise comedian and musical act openers, as well as special guests during the encore. Proceeds go to charity.

Phish @ Madison Square Garden
Another NYC tradition is Phish’s annual New Year’s run, which continues tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Marco Benevento @ (le) poisson rouge
One of the official Phish afterparties tonight is songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marco Benevento who released the great Let It Slide earlier this year.

Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) @ Sony Hall
Yasiin Bey has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of Black on Both Sides, his solo debut as Mos Def. This is his third and, for now, final performance of the record. UPDATE: This show has been postponed until March 19, 2020.

Deer Tick, Robert Ellis @ Brooklyn Bowl
Few bands exude the holiday spirit, including a bit of its dark side, like the boozy country rock of Deer Tick, who will be in the festive mode tonight..

The Howling Hex @ Baby’s All Right
Neil Michael Hegarty of Royal Trux also makes scuzzy noise rock with The Howling Hex who fill your eardrums with similar junk.

Matisyahu, Bedouin Soundclash, Your Old Droog @ Brooklyn Steel
Matisyahu brings his annual “Festival of Light” Hanukkah tour to NYC starting tonight, with support from Toronto-based Bedouin Soundclash and NYC rapper Your Old Droog.

David Byrne’s American Utopia @ Hudson Theatre
David Byrne has retooled his acclaimed “untethered” 2018 for the Broadway stage and while the setlist and arrangements are much like what they were on his tour, songs are now threaded together with new monologues from Byrne, making for a much more theatrical experience.

New Bomb Turks, The Atom Age, Spite Fuxxx @ Saint Vitus
Garage punk vets New Bomb Turks conclude their Northeastern holiday tour at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus tonight.

Poison Idea, Drunken Rampage, School Drugs, Chesty Malone & The Slice ‘Em Ups, Opulence @ The Kingsland
Portland punk legends Poison Idea are saying their current December run of dates are their “last ever shows,” and though they’ve said this before, you still might not want to risk missing this potentially-last chance to see them.

NRBQ @ WFMU Monty Hall
Musicians musicians, “world’s greatest bar band” NRBQ have been at it for over 50 years, with original member Terry Adams at the helm.

Sandra Bernhard @ Joe’s Pub
Sandra Bernhard is currently doing her 10th-annual New Year’s run at Joe’s Pub, titled “Sandy’s Holiday Extravaganza – A Decade of Madness and Mayhem.” There’s an early and late show tonight, where she plans to “lift you up and soothe your frazzled holiday nerves.”

You can also find quality entertainment on almost any night of the week at: Barbès bar and performance space in Park Slope, LunÀtico in Bed Stuy, Nublu in the East Village, Blue Note jazz club in the West Village, The Stone in multiple locations, Comedy Cellar in the West Village, and Q.E.D. comedy club in Astoria.
