Van Morrison

What's going on Sunday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Van Morrison, Shana Morrison @ Forest Hills Stadium
Van Morrison put out a handful of classic jazz-pop and folk material in the late ’60s and early ’70s, including the live album It’s Too Late to Stop Now, which got reissued earlier this year. Hopefully we can expect stuff from that era tonight.

A Global Threat, Strike Anywhere, War on Women @ Saint Vitus
Melodic hardcore greats Strike Anywhere toured with A Global Threat back in 2006, and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of that tour, they’re doing it again. If you’re going, it’s worth catching the killer opening band War On Women, whose live show you will not forget.

The Get Up Kids, Brick + Mortar @ Monty Hall
Tons of bands from the early 2000s pop punk/emo boom owe a lot of their sound to The Get Up Kids’ ’90s material, which still sounds great today. It’s a treat that they’re such an active live band again.

Early Riser, Mikey Erg, Jamie Kilstein and the Agenda @ Berlin
Mikey Erg is a true hero of modern punk and one of the most prolific musicians in the genre. He’s reuniting The Ergs! this year, and he also released a ripping solo album, Tentative Decisions.

Merchandise, Public Memory, Flasher @ Villain
With their new album A Corpse Wired For Sound, Merchandise move still further from their punk roots and into late-’80s Brit alt-rock, still with lots of style. Tonight’s show was moved from Market Hotel to Williamsburg venue Villain.

Nots, Pill, Weeping Icon @ Silent Barn
Memphis band Nots have not tamed their snarling, dystopian garage punk in the least on new album Cosmetic, which is a real ripper. Catch them on this all-around terrific bill.

Elysian Fields, Secret Sibling @ The Owl
Long-running NYC band Elysian Fields, who released new album Ghosts of No back in the spring, play on their home turf tonight (the band’s Oren Bloedow and Jennifer Charles own The Owl),

Bill Frisell @ Blue Note
An insanely talented guitarist who can play just about any style, Bill Frisell is a wonder to see perform. Tonight he plays with Greg Leisz (guitar and steel guitars), Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums).

Joey Arias @ Joe’s Pub
Downtown scene legend Joey Arias, who has performed with Klaus Nomi, David Bowie and others, is in the midst of a three-show residency at Joe’s Pub titled “Joey Arias is With You Now.”

The Perennials, Hoferlanz @ Threes Brewing
Brassland (the label founded by Alec Bemis and National members Aaron & Bryce Dessner) is throwing a few parties at Threes Brewing, including this one with Doveman collaborators The Perennials and The National/Sufjan Stevens/Beirut collaborator Hoferlanz (aka Ben Lanz) (who released an album the Devendorfs from The National earlier this year under the name LNZNDRF).
