What's going on Sunday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Shellac, Shannon Wright @ The Bell House
Steve Albini’s pummeling band Shellac are in motion this year, and this is the first of two sold-out Bell House this year.
Latterman, Cayetana, Worriers @ Knitting Factory
The members of Long Island punks Latterman are always active in Iron Chic, RVIVR, and other bands, but Latterman shows are pretty rare these days. They’re doing a few reunion gigs this month, their first shows since 2012. Tonight’s show has two very cool openers that blur the lines between pop punk and indie rock.
Lucero, Cory Branan @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Lucero have rowdy, whiskey-fueled punk songs, but they also have softer (and, still whiskey-fueled) country songs, and plenty of the in-between. Their shows are always a great time, and tonight will surely be no different.
Goes Cube, Primitive Weapons, Dalek, Descender @ Saint Vitus
NYC metal outfit Goes Cube have been a band since the early 2000s, trafficking in a brand of metal that’s at once intense and emotional, pulling from indie rock and hardcore in addition to more obvious heavy touchstones. They just released what they’re saying is their final album, and tonight’s show is in support of that. There are some cool openers, including reunited industrial rap group Dalek.
Gojira, TesseracT @ Terminal 5
French death metal giants returned this year with Magma, another heavy but hooky album from this consistently great band.
Grim Reaper, Psychoprism, Gothic Knights @ The Marlin Room at Webster Hall
NWOBHM greats Grim Reaper returned this year with their first album since 1987, and it sounds straight out of the ’80s, without a touch of modernity. It’s fun.
The Wonder Years, Real Friends, Knuckle Puck, Moose Blood, Seaway @ Webster Hall
The Wonder Years make the kind of shiny pop punk that dominated the radio and MTV in the late ’90s and early ’00s, and they manage to push the boundaries of the genre in ways that even their predecessors couldn’t. If you like this kind of music at all, no band is doing it better right now.
Dave Chappelle @ The Cutting Room
The always-hilarious Dave Chappelle is doing another of his runs of intimate shows at the Cutting Room. It’s a three-night run, starting tonight. And remember, no cell phones allowed inside the venue.
Cherry Glazerr, Ian Sweet @ Baby’s All Right
Cherry Glazerr’s first LP got hyped while the three members were still in high school, and they’ve come a long way since them, having signed to Secretly Canadian and their new single is leaps and bounds better than anything they’d previously released. We’re anxious to hear more new stuff.
La Sera, Springtime Carnivore, TV Party @ Baby’s All Right
Two acts, three shows: both La Sera and Springtime Carnivore not only have new records of their own but their singers, Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan, have an album of covers as well. Expect a little from each at this matinee show (2 PM doors).
Har Mar Superstar, Sweet Spirit @ Bowery Ballroom
It is autumn but in Har Mar Superstar’s mind, it’s still the Best Summer Ever (also the name of his latest album). He brings the party live.
Johann Johannsson @ Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph
Icelandic electronic artist and Oscar-nominated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who is set to score the new Blade Runner film, just released new album Orphee.
The Garden, So Pitted, HeyRocco @ The Studio at Webster Hall
This is sure to be a weird (very weird), fun show, with eccentric California duo The Garden, and Seattle’s sci-fi punks So Pitted.
