Tess Parks, Heaters, Breanna Barbara @ Baby’s All Right
Tess Parks and Breanna Barbara make for a good pairing, both work on the smokier side of psych. Tess has collaborated with Brian Jonestown Massacre and Breanna just got off tour as vocalist with Tricky. Michigan’s Heaters make this an all-around good bill.
Fabio Frizzi @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Soundtrack composer Fabio Frizzi, who worked closely with Italian horror master Lucio Fulci, will be performing a live score to a screening of 1980’s classic The Beyond
Preservation Hall Jazz Band @ Brooklyn Bowl
The house band at New Orleans’ legendary Preservation Hall play their first of two NYC shows this week.
Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band, Good Old War @ Brooklyn Steel (BILL)
Talented singer-songwriter Josh Ritter plays tonight in support of his ninth album, Gathering.
Diamanda Galas @ Murmrr Theatre
Goth icon, avant-garde diva and autre legend Diamanda Galás is like nobody else, and getting to see her around Halloween is pretty great.
Gnaw, Couch Slut, Escuela, Syndromes @ Saint Vitus
Metallic noisemakers Gnaw just released their new album Cutting Pieces, and they celebrate tonight with direct support from Couch Slut, which is a perfect pairing.
Buzzov-en, Earthride, Crushed @ Knitting Factory
Sludge vets Buzzov-en‘s shows are few and far between these days, but they’re currently doing a short Halloween Weekend run with Earthride, the Maryland doom band led by Spirit Caravan’s Dave Sherman.
Tee Grizzley, Lud Foe, OMB Peezy, Sada Baby @ Gramercy Theatre
Detroit rapper Tee Grizzly released his debut album this year, My Moment (on Quality Control/300), and he really is having a moment. This is his biggest headlining show in NYC by far.
Curren$y, Kent Jones, Corner Boy P, T.Y., DJ Ski Beatz @ BB King’s
The ridiculously prolific jazz-rapper Curren$y began his Pilot Talk trilogy with two beloved albums in 2010, and he released the third and final installment five years later. He’s on tour now celebrating the Pilot Talk material.
Split Squad, Dressy Bessy, Palmyra Delran, Stupidity @ The Bowery Electric
The Split Squad formed around singer/bassist Michael Giblin, who is a session musician and producer and has fronted bands like The Parallax Project and Cherry Twister. If that name is unfamiliar, you might know some of the rest of the band: Clem Burke (Blondie), Keith Streng (The Fleshtones), Eddie Munoz (The Plimsouls), and Josh Kantor (The Baseball Project). Dressy Bessy, meanwhile, have been around since the ’90s and make crunchy powerpop that never gets too sweet.
Primus @ The Capitol Theatre
Primus just released new album, The Desaturating Seven, which finds Les Claypool and co as gleefully weird as ever. We have a feeling they’ll be celebrating Halloween early tonight.
Jeffrey Lewis, Are Skwaird @ The Owl
The great Jeffrey Lewis manages to be entertaining and thoughtful, and pretty much any chance to see him will brighten your day.
David West, Teardrops, Dark Tea, New Rose @ Union Pool
You may know Australian musician David West as a member of Total Control, Rat Columns, Rank/Xerox, Lace Curtains, and more. Adding to his list of projects is solo project David West with Teardrops who just released Cherry on Willow. Tonight’s the record release show.
Shannon and the Clams @ WFMU Monty Hall
In town for Jonathan Toubin’s Haunted Hop, the great Shannon & The Clams are playing a couple other NYC-area shows before Halloween.
