What's going on Sunday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
The Jesus Lizard, Show Me The Body @ Irving Plaza
Post-hardcore/noise rock legends The Jesus Lizard have reunited for the first time in eight years for this tour which is heading towards Houston’s Day for Night Fest. Says frontman David Yow, “I’m not going to be able to act like I’m 30. It wasn’t easy then, and now it’s motherfuckin’ hard.” Still don’t expect this to be, y’know, mellow.
Converge, Pile @ Saint Vitus
Converge have been making boundary-pushing metallic hardcore for over two decades, and this year’s The Dusk In Us rivals just about any of their classics. They’re playing two sold-out shows at Saint Vitus this weekend, which is a very intimate place to see them these days. This is night two.
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Big Huge @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Ted Leo released Hanged Man, his first album in seven years, earlier this year and has been on the road since with the Pharmacists. He wraps up that tour tonight.
Perfume Genius, DM Stith @ Bowery Ballroom
Perfume Genius’ fourth album No Shape is yet another noticeable step forward for him, and it’s deservedly been ending up on tons of year-end lists. To wrap up this great year, he’s playing four NYC shows at venues that are a little small for him these days. This is the first show.
SZA, Smino, Ravyn Lenae @ Brooklyn Steel
SZA’s debut album CTRL is being recognized as one of the very best of the year which makes sense, given its perfect mix of relatable lyrics and ridiculously catchy songs. She plays NYC tonight and tomorrow, both with Smino and Ravyn Lenae, who are a great match for SZA and not to be missed.
Nadia Reid, John Andrews, Suno Deko @ The Park Church Co-Op
New Zealand bare-bones folk singer Nadia Reid has been picking up buzz for her 2017 sophomore album Preservation, and tonight she makes her NYC debut. She’s long been associated with Aldous Harding and she’s coming off playing some shows with Julie Byrne, both of whom are somewhat similar to Nadia, and both of whom we caught at the Park Church Co-Op earlier this year. It’s a gorgeous location for this kind of music, and should be perfect for Nadia.
A John Waters Christmas @ City Winery
Filmmaker, author and (bad) tastemaker John Waters takes his love-hate relationship with the holiday season and turns it into his annual “A John Waters Christmas” live show.
