What's going on Sunday?

Girl Ray
Girl Ray

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Girl Ray, Annie Hart @ Union Pool (BrooklynVegan Presents)
Having just wrapped up a tour with Porches, UK group Girl Ray play this headline show tonight that we’re pleased to be presenting this show. Their debut album, Early Grey, is fantastic and this is their last show before heading home. Don’t miss Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone either. Hope to see you there.

Clan Of Xymox, Decoded Feedback, StatiqBloom, Anatomy @ Brooklyn Bazaar
One of the early bands on 4AD, Clan of Xymox’s dark synthpop sound helped shape what people consider “goth” today and they’ve a bunch of classics like “Muscoviet Mosquito,” “Louise,” “Obsession,” and more. This is their first U.S. tour in more than 20 years and first of two NYC shows.

Iceage, Norman Westberg, Dorit Chrysler @ Secret Project Robot
Iceage continue their “Opening Nights” residency, moving tonight to Secret Project Robot, giving folks a taste of new album Beyondless.

MGMT, Matthew Dear @ Brooklyn Steel
MGMT recently released their great new album Little Dark Age, which is still rooted in the kind of ultra-weird psychedelia of the band’s last two albums, but they seem more focused on catchy pop on this one than they have been sine Oracular Spectacular. They’re in the midst of three Brooklyn shows, this being the second.

Justin Timberlake @ Prudential Center
Justin Timberlake recently released his new album Man of the Woods which a lot of people hate, but that didn’t stop it from producing a few successful singles that you hear everywhere, and come on, some of those singles are pretty undeniable. He’s also of course playing tons of his many generation-defining pop songs on this tour, which hits Prudential Center tonight and returns to the area for two MSG shows in October.

Gang of Youths, Common Holly @ Bowery Ballroom
Gang of Youths sort of pull equally from Springsteen and The National on their great 2017 album Go Farther in Lightness, and though sometimes they wear their influences on their sleeves, they always find a way to make it their own. Their live show is also exceptionally good — they were one of our very favorite sets at SXSW last week. Opening tonight is Montreal’s jazzy indie rockers Common Holly, who are not to miss.

I Am The Avalanche, Nightmare of You @ Gramercy Theatre
When The Movielife broke up, singer Vinnie Caruana formed the grunge/punk band I Am the Avalanche and guitarist Brandon Reilly formed the Smiths-y Nightmare of You. The Movielife are back together now and touring later this year, but first, IATA and NOY are doing a quick run of shows together.

Necrot, Skullshitter, Syndromes, Pyrolatrous @ Saint Vitus
Bay Area death metallers Necrot had a killer 2017 with the release of Blood Offerings on the Tankcrimes label. They’re supporting it with more shows this year, including Vitus tonight.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Bigwig, Westbound Train @ White Eagle Hall
Ska-punk vets The Mighty Mighty Bosstones just played Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival yesterday, and tonight they’re hitting Jersey again for a club show. Local punk vets Bigwig make for strong direct support.

Porches, Okay Kaya @ Elsewhere
While Porches just wrapped up a tour with Girl Ray (who play Union Pool tonight), they’ve added one last NYC show.

No Vacation, Hot Flash Heat Wave, Surf Rock is Dead @ Baby’s All Right
Originally from San Francisco, featherlight dreampop band No Vacation released their most recent EP on Topshelf and now call Brooklyn home. Come welcome them to the neighborhood.

The English Beat @ City Winery
Dave Wakeling is making a new English Beat album, titled Here We Go Love, which will apparently be out this summer. In the meantime he’s taking the current lineup of the band — he’s the only original member — on the road, playing all the classics (and maybe a General Public song or two as well).

Persisticon w/ Bridget Everett, Sally Kohn, Murray Hill, Aparna Nancherla, Ophira Eisenberg, Negin Farsad, Jaclyn Friedman, Jo Firestone, Jon Glaser, Angie Pontani, Michelle Buteau, Swune @ The Bell House
A crazy quality lineup of great comedians join forces for this benefit for Emily’s List where “comedy, art and electing females collide.” Sold out.

David Cross, Myq Kaplan, Erica Spera @ Littlefield
David Cross has been doing these work-in-progress shows for a while now (and he’s done a lot of them), so whatever it is he’s working on has to be getting pretty good at this point.
