What's going on Thursday?

Dr. Octagon
Dr. Octagon

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Dr. Octagon, Handsome Boy Modeling School @ Brooklyn Bowl
Deeply weird hip hop group Dr. Octagon — aka Kool Keith, Dan the Automator, and DJ Qbert — are back with their first official album in 20 years (which is very good!) and celebrate its release tonight. Making the evening more special is Handsome Boy Modeling School — Dan the Automator and Prince Paul’s whimsical late-’90s/early-’00s collaborative project who are back in action, too, and this is their first public NYC show in over a decade. DJ Qbert will spin at the afterparty.

Sorority Noise, Remo Drive, Jelani Sei @ Bowery Ballroom
Modern-day emo faves Sorority Noise are going on hiatus after this tour ends, so these are your very last chances to catch them for what may be a while. Tonight’s their last NYC-area show of the tour. SN fans will most likely dig the likeminded Remo Drive, and while the groovy Jelani Sei are stylistically different, their set is very much worth catching as well.

Mirah, Secret Drum Band @ Elsewhere
Indie singer/songwriter Mirah hasn’t released a full-length album since 2014, but she has worthy music dating back nearly two decades and has no shortage of great songs to pull from tonight.

Swearin’, Big Eyes, Dark Thoughts, Weed Hounds @ Market Hotel
Indie-punks Swearin’ have been inactive for a while, as co-frontperson Allison Crutchfield has been busy with her solo project and playing in Waxahatchee, but they’re now back and touring with Superchunk. They take a break from that tour tonight to play this headlining Brooklyn show.

The Weather Station, Aerial East @ Mercury Lounge
The Weather Station are still riding high off the release of their great self-titled 2017 album, which is a trip right back to early ’70s Laurel Canyon folk rock. Their mesmerizing live show brings you right there too.

Gallant @ National Sawdust
Alt-R&B singer Gallant recently released a great new single, “Gentleman,” which is colder and more atmospheric than the songs on his 2016 debut. He says his next album will be out this year, but meanwhile, he’s playing a few intimate shows.

Cleric, Pyrrhon, Seven)Suns @ Saint Vitus
Philly’s long-running avant-garde metal band Cleric headlines this show, and there are great and diverse openers: tech-death freaks Pyrrhon and metal-friendly orchestral group Seven)Suns.

The Black Angels, The Black Lips @ Brooklyn Steel
If you garage psych, leather and denim the only thing that could make this show better would be if Black Rebel Motorcycle Club were also playing.

Superorganism, Helena Deland @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Superorganism are a international pop collective whose members hail from the US, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and elsewhere. Their debut album just came out on Domino and they were one of the more talked about bands at SXSW. Do you believe the hype?

L.A. Salami, Cat Clyde @ Rough Trade
L.A. Salami is the stage name of London musician Lookman Adekunle Salami (and not, like, some party rock band named after a deli in Silverlake). Mixing folk, blues, and pop into his hyper-verbal style, he would’ve fit nicely into the scene that gave us Laura Marling, Emmy the Great and Dev Hynes when he was Lightspeed Champion.

Arc Iris, The Brother Brothers & Others, Lord Youth @ Union Pool
Providence trio Arc Iris, led by onetime Low Anthem member Jocie Adams, blend cabaret, folk, rock and other styles into a truly unique sound.

Springsteen on Broadway @ Walter Kerr Theatre
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

Brandi Carlile @ Beacon Theatre
Americana and folk vet Brandi Carlile recently released By The Way, I Forgive You, her sixth album, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums Chart. She kicks off her spring tour this week with three nights at NYC’s Beacon Theatre, this being the first.
