A Place to Bury Strangers, Surfbort, Conduit @ Elsewhere
While still featuring plenty of warped, noisy guitar effects, A Place to Bury Strangers’ fifth album, Pinned, is a bit of a departure, adding more electronics, and new drummer Lia Simone plays a big role, including vocals. It’s their best in a while and they celebrate its release tonight. Their live show remains one-of-a-kind.
Maxo Kream, Cuz Lightyear, Westside Parle @ SOB’s
Maxo Kream’s Punken is one of the year’s most enjoyable rap albums. It’s got a little modern trap but also a throwback side, and it’s just hit after hit. He’s in NYC tonight and his tourmate Cuz Lightyear is not to be missed.
L7, Death Valley Girls @ Brooklyn Steel
Punk/grunge vets L7 just announced that they’ll release their first album since 1999 in 2019, following some recent killer singles. Until then, they’re on tour. Their tourmates Death Valley Girls are worth catching too.
JPEGMAFIA, Jalen Santoy, Starchild and The New Romantic @ NYU Kimmel Center
Abstract, experimental rapper JPEGMAFIA released his great new album Veteran earlier this year and tonight he plays NYU. The show is FREE and open to the public.
Eric B & Rakim, Yo-Yo @ The Paramount
Having just wrapped up two NYC shows, reunited rap legends Eric B & Rakim play Long Island tonight. Both NYC shows had special surprise guests. Will tonight have guests too?
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ‘Distant Sky’ Screenings
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have a new concert film, titled Distant Sky, which was directed by David Barnard and filmed at Copenhagen’s Royal Arena in October 2017, as part of the Skeleton Tree tour. The film is playing worldwide today, one day only. In NYC you can see it at Alamo Drafthouse, Metrograph, The IFC Center, The Beekman Theatre, and Landmark 57 West.
Tinashe @ Sony Hall
Tinashe finally releases her long-awaited Joyride album this week, and she celebrates with a release party tonight. It’s free with RSVP (click the above link).
Demetri Martin @ The Wellmont Theater
Demetri Martin’s been on his “Let’s Get Awkward” tour for what seems like forever, but we guess it hasn’t gotten too awkward yet.
Bill Orcutt, Chuck Johnson, Samara Lubelski @ Union Pool
Experimental guitar great Bill Orcutt headlines this sold out show of improvisational music.
The Loser’s Lounge Tribute to The Band’s Last Waltz @ Joe’s Pub
This month, The Loser’s Lounge Orchestra pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of The Band’s The Last Waltz, with help from a bevy of guest singers. Early and late shows.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
Biosong with Tommy McNamara / Joey Dundale, Come Alive! @ The Brick
The Brooklyn Comedy Collective presents this double header, featuring a solo show from masterful character actor Joey Dundale of IFC’s Video Frogs, as well as a more musical offering from Tommy McNamara with Biosong. For his part, McNamara will interview two guest comedians – this week, it’s Josh Gondelman and Clare O’Kane – and then draft a song about them as they perform stand up. He will then, of course, perform the song live that night.
Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo (acoustic) @ Bergen PAC
Rock veteran Pat Benatar and longtime collaborator Neil Giraldo are in the midst of an intimate acoustic tour, which hits New Jersey tonight. Should be a very special way to see her.
