What’s going on Thursday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Built To Spill, Rituals of Mine @ Baby’s All Right
Having just played a big Brooklyn Steel show with Afghan Whigs, Built to Spill tonight play one of their most intimate NYC shows in recent memory.
Preoccupations, Freak Heat Waves @ Rough Trade
Preoccupations’ second album, New Material, found the Canadian band intensifying their dark, post-punk approach, and bettering it on almost all levels. Tonight’s show is sold-out but there are still tickets to Friday’s show at Elsewhere Zone One.
Pharoah Sanders, Jaimie Branch @ Le Poisson Rouge
Pharoah Sanders was in John Coltrane’s classic mid ’60s band, and he’s released plenty of excellent music as a bandleader, like 1969’s classic Karma. He still plays today, and his live shows are always excellent and always worth catching.
ModernMedieval, Julianna Barwick @ Merkin Concert Hall (Ecstatic Music Festival)
Ecstatic Music Festival pairs “pop” musicians with modern classical musicians for unique collaborations, and tonight they’ve got the great ambient/indie pop musician Julianna Barwick joining the ModernMedieval ensemble (which includes former Anonymous 4 founder Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek and Roomful of Teeth’s Martha Cluver and Eliza Bagg).
Life of Agony, The Pain Method @ Saint Vitus
Brooklyn alt-metal vets Life of Agony are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album by going on a lengthy tour that will include “some old fan favorites that [they’ve ]never played before live.” The tour begins with two sold-out hometown shows at Saint Vitus.
Joey Bada$$, Boogie, Buddy @ Terminal 5
Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ is touring in continued support of last year’s excellent All-Amerikkkan Bada$$, and he’s got two great openers along for the ride. Tonight, he plays his home turf.
Wyclef Jean @ The Capitol Theatre
Former Fugee and long-running solo artist Wyclef Jean has been in the midst of a comeback lately, and he continues that with this NYC-area show tonight.
Jeff Rosenstock, Martha, Bad Moves @ Warsaw
Jeff Rosenstock’s first album for Polyvinyl, POST-, is one of the best indie/punk albums of 2018 so far, and his always-crazy live shows have been better than ever lately. He plays Warsaw tonight and tomorrow, and both openers are worth catching.
Bishop Nehru, Elijah Banksy @ Mercury Lounge
New York rapper Bishop Nehru is fresh off releasing his new album Elevators: Act I & II, which was produced by Kaytranada and MF Doom. He celebrates with a hometown show tonight.
Soulfly, Nile @ Gramercy Theatre
Max Cavalera’s band Soulfly recently toured Max’s Nailbomb album in full, but now they’re back on the road playing their own stuff, and tech-death vets Nile make this bill even more appealing.
Dead Rider, Upper Wilds @ Secret Project Robot
Currently on tour with Mountain Goats, Chicago’s glitchy, abstract and ofter beautiful Dead Rider play this headlining show tonight.
Ministry, Chelsea Wolfe @ The Paramount
Goth industrial icons Ministry bring their jackhammer style, as heard on subtly titled new album AmeriKKKant, back to the NYC area, and if you’re going tonight do get there in time for the more modern, folky goth sounds of Chelsea Wolfe.
Nap Eyes, She-Devils @ Elsewhere Zone One
Canadian band Nap Eyes make pleasing, Lou Reed-y strummy rock as can be heard on their new album I’m Bad Now. Also on the bill tonight are Montreal’s sample-heavy She-Devils.
Baths, No Joy, Sasami Ashworth @ Elsewhere Hall
Meanwhile, in Elsewhere’s bigger hall it’s No Joy, who just released a collaborative EP with Sonic Boom, and Anticon electronic artist Baths.
Ilana Glazer, Yedoye Travis, Kate Willett, Shane Torres @ Murmrr Theatre
We were a little bummed to hear that Broad City won’t be back until 2019, but we’re glad Ilana Glazer is staying in the public eye with standup shows like this.
PAT Party, JD Samson @ Union Pool
It’s time for JD Samson’s monthly PAT Party, featuring “good vibes, good sound, video projection by local video artists and DJ’s that aren’t afraid to go deep.” Those DJs tonight include Amber Valentine, Robi D Light, Eli Escobar, and Tylerkinesis.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
Rufus Wainwright “Northern Stars” @ Saint Ann’s Warehouse
This is the first of three “Northern Stars” shows at St Ann’s Warehouse where Rufus Wainwright will pay tribute to Canadian songwriters of all shapes and sizes, from Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen, to Arcade Fire and Men Without Hats.
‘The Search for Animal Chin’ Soundtrack release party @ Wonders of Nature
For Record Store Day 2018, Kanine Records is releasing the soundtrack to cult classic 1987 skateboard film The Search for Animal Chin (which starred s “Bones Brigade” skate team of Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero). It’s the first time it’s ever been released and to celebrate, they’re throwing a free party where they’ll show the film, have displays of ’80s Powell & Peralta Board Artwork from Eric Pinto’s private collection, plus special giveaways, a live band performance from Nastie Band and more.
