Trip hop icon Tricky is back for another tour supporting last year’s ununiform, and BrooklynVegan is presenting this show. Tricky remains an intense, unique performer who continues to look forward.

The 2018 Red Bull Music Festival kicks off with this very interesting showcase made up of artists who are “directly or spiritually” influenced by the late graffiti-writer, artist and MC RAMMΣLLZΣΣ. It’s headlined by modern-day New York rap leader Wiki, who’s playing a collaborative set with the legendary Coati Mundi (of Kid Creole and the Coconuts and more). The lineup also includes punk-rap group Show Me The Body, hip hop/jazz blenders Standing on the Corner, experimental rapper MIKE, Wiki’s Ratking groupmate Sporting Life, producer Tony Seltzer, avant-rap duo 700 Bliss (aka Moor Mother and DJ Haram), the soulful Mal Devisa, and alt-rap vet (and Wiki collaborator) Edan (“on disk jokk and echo duties”).
Nick Cave (in conversation with) @ Symphony Space
Nick Cave invites you to ask him anything at this event: ” The more frank and intimate the questions, the more interesting the evening will be. The audience can ask me anything and I’ll do my best to answer. I do have some things to say. I can always play some songs at the piano if it all goes horribly wrong. But, I don’t know, I’ve got a good feeling about this one.”
Lord Huron, Midnight Sister @ Beacon Theatre
Lord Huron are fresh off releasing their new Dave Fridmann-mixed album Vide Noir, which is more psychedelic and more driving than any of their past work, and easily their best album yet. They play a sold-out Beacon Theatre tonight, followed by two Brooklyn Steel shows in August.
Action Bronson @ Kupferberg Center for the Arts (Queens College)
Action Bronson recently parted ways with his major label and he’s set to self-release a new mixtape soon. Tonight, the Flushing rapper plays a hometown show at Flushing’s Queens College.
The Sword, The Shelter People @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Long-running band The Sword are still churning out ’70s-inspired riffs, as evidenced on this year’s Used Future. They play MHOW tonight and return to NYC in June for an Irving Plaza show with The Atomic Bitchwax.
H.R. (Bad Brains), Super Hi-Fi, Beat Brigade @ The Bowery Electric
Having just played a secret set at the opening night of new NYC venue Coney Island Baby, which Jesse Malin is a co-owner of, Bad Brains frontman HR now plays another Jesse Malin-owned venue, Bowery Electric.
Melkbelly, Brandy, Bethlehem Steel @ Alphaville
Chicago’s Melkbelly released their debut album last year on Speedy Ortiz singer Sadie Dupuis’ Carpark imprint, and if you like the kind of indie rock that Speedy make, you’ll probably dig Melkbelly too. They just played the Capitol Theatre last night opening for The Breeders (who play a free Prospect Park show with Speedy Ortiz this summer), and they’re hanging around the NYC-area for a much smaller, headlining show tonight.
Shigeto, Ben Saginaw, Vinnie Massimino, Olive T @ Elsewhere Hall
After returning last year with the new album The New Monday, Michigan producer Shigeto is back on the road now and hitting Brooklyn tonight.
Wreckless Eric, Thomas Heyman @ Berlin
Best known for his late-’70s hit “Whole Wide World,” Wreckless Eric has made a dozen or so records since, all with his wonderful wit and way with melody, most recently this yera’s Construction Time & Demolition.
Anvil, Shadowside, Metalfier @ (le) poisson rouge
Canadian metal vets are best known below the U.S. border for the 2008 documentary about them, but their riffs and heart still ring loud and clear.
Jeffrey Lewis and Los Bolts, Lonesome Crew @ Pianos
Heartfelt, thoughtful and often very funny, Jeffrey Lewis is a New York treasure.

“Charles Atlas stages ‘The Kitchen Follies,’ bringing together a range of artists across performance art, dance, and music to stage the ultimate performance art variety show. Some are artists with whom Atlas has had relationships for many decades, including composer Julianna Barwick who will create a new work in collaboration with Jodi Melnick, performance artist Johanna Constantine, duo DANCENOISE, and choreographer Stanley Love.”
Todd Rundgren’s Utopia @ Town Hall
Todd Rundgren is getting the band back together, specifically his ’70s progressive rock group Utopia, and the lineup this time features bassist Kasim Sulton, drummer Willie Wilcox and keyboardist Ralph Shuckett.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
