What's going on Thursday?

Battles @ Saint Vitus, 2016
Battles @ Saint Vitus, 2016 (more by Greg Cristman)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Cyndi Lauper, Boy George @ Beacon Theater
Holy 1985! Two music/style icons of the Reagan era will share the stage tonight. We’re hoping for a “Time After Time (Clock of the Heart)” collaboration.

Britta Phillips @ Rough Trade
Britta Phillips has been an active musician since the late-’80s, most recently with Luna and as one half of Dean & Britta. She only just recently released her first solo album, Luck or Magic, which doesn’t stray to far from her other recent projects. She celebrates the new album tonight with this free in-store featuring hubby Dean Wareham on guitar. 7 PM.

Battles, Steve Moore @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Instrumental math rockers Battles are mind-meltingly talented and pretty damn weird too. Tonight should be something special.

Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Urochromes, Warthog, Wrung, Suspect @ Palisades
Of all the bands in NYC’s punk underground, the organ-fueled Hank Wood and the Hammerwoods may be the most likely to appeal to larger audiences. For now they’re still regularly hitting small venues like this one, which is really where you want to see them.

Radical Face @ National Sawdust
Poppy indie project Radical Face is best known for his 2007 single “Welcome Home,” but he’s continued to maintain a dedicated fanbase and put out consistently good records like this year’s The Leaves. He plays two National Sawdust shows this week, and both are sold out.

TSOL, The Scandals, The Great Lie @ The Studio at Webster Hall
SoCal punk vets TSOL were sort of the West Coast Misfits, with their 1981 debut Dance With Me being one of the earliest examples of horror punk. They’re still with most of their original lineup (everyone but the late drummer Todd Barnes), and it’s a real treat that we can still see them today.

Promise Keeper, QTY @ Berlin
With his band Mood Rings currently in a holding pattern, William Fussel has launched a new project, titled Promise Keeper. If you liked Mood Rings’ shimmery, sultry single “The Line” chances are you’ll like Promise Keeper which is decidedly more on the electro/new romantic soulful pop side (by way of ’80s Michael Mann soundtracks). Stick around after the show — Kristin Kontrol is DJing.

Low Cut Connie, Erika Spring & Annie Hart (Of Au Revoir Simone), Nick Hakim, Domino Kirke, Questlove (DJ set) @ Brooklyn Bowl
This benefit concert for the David Lynch Foundation features Erika & Annie from Au Revoir Simone (who don’t play so much these days).

A Giant Dog, Gunfight @ Cake Shop
Austin glammy, punky rock band A Giant Dog released the first album for Merge, Pile, earlier this year which is a whole lot of fun.

Holly Miranda @ Hell Phone
With a new covers EP on the way, Holly Miranda is playing this four-show residency at this restaurant/speakeasy. Expect some cool guests at this final installment.

‘Los Punks’ screening w/ The Casualties, South Central Riot Squad, Age of Fear @ House of Vans
A collaboration with Rooftop Films, this event features a screening of documentary Los Punks: We Are All We Have, and then performances by some of the bands in the movie. Free with RSVP.

Southern Culture on the Skids @ Bell House
North Carolina’s SCOTS have been ripping it up since the early ’80s with their southern-fried mix of rockabilly, surf rock, and country.

Sinkane @ Union Pool
DFA recording artist and Caribou collaborator Sinkane is going to be testing out new material this month at a three-show residency happening at Brooklyn’s Union Pool on Thursdays.

‘Testimonium’ ft. Joan of Arc @ Knockdown Center
Back in 2013, Joan of Arc teamed with experimental theater ensemble Every house has a door for the performance piece Testimonium, which eventually resulted in Joan of Arc recording the music they wrote for it as Testimonium Songs. Now they’re set to give Testimonium its New York premiere from May 26-28 at the Knockdown Center in Queens

Lizzo, DJ Sophia Eris @ Mercury Lounge
Minneapolis rapper Lizzo toured opening for Sleater-Kinney last year, and she managed to win over huge sold-out crowds who were waiting to see the first S-K shows in a decade. She should do just fine at a headlining show too.

Despise You, Yacoepsae, Sanitys Dawn, Whoresnation, Six Brew Bantha, Backslider @ Saint Vitus
LA powerviolence legends Despise You are hitting MDF this weekend, but stopping in NYC first.

Heron Oblivion, Endless Boogie, Chris Forsythe & the Solar Motel Band @ WFMU Monty Hall
Psych-folk supergroup Heron Oblivion are fronted by Meg Baird and feature members of Comets On Fire and Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound. Their excellent self-titled debut came out earlier this year on Sub Pop, and this week they play two NYC-area shows. Jersey City tonight, Brooklyn on Saturday.

PC Worship, Martin Bisi, Dead Waves, Parlor Walls, Prima, Ritual Humor @ Shea Stadium
A lot of music for your Thursday at this Shea show, headlined by noisy experimentalists PC Worship and featuring NYC scene vet Martin Bisi, and lots more.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
