What’s going on Thursday?

Saint Etienne
Saint Etienne

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Saint Etienne play ‘Good Humor’ @ Warsaw
Saint Etienne’s 1998 album Good Humor was a change of pace for the UK trio, which found them decamping to Sweden to work with Cardigans producer Tore Johansson and eschewing keyboards in favor of live instruments. Armed with the same great band who backed them last year, Saint Etienne are celebrating the album’s 20th anniversary by playing it in full, with a second set of classics and new songs as well.

Saintseneca, Black Belt Eagle Scout, gobbinjr @ Bowery Ballroom
Harmony-fueled indie folkies Saintseneca are on tour now behind their just-released Pillar of Na, and there’s well matched support from recent Saddle Creek signee Black Belt Eagle Scout.

Local H @ Rough Trade
Alt-rock lifers Local H are on a very special tour, where they’re promising “close to three hours of music” across two sets, with special guest John Haggerty of Naked Raygun and Pegboy joining them on guitar. The first set is a career spanning set and the second will have them playing 1998’s Pack Up The Cats in full for its 20th anniversary.

Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band featuring Nicki Bluhm & Eric Krasno @ Capitol Theatre
The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh is on night two of his three-night NYC-area run, and this one’s at a theater just outside of the city that he frequently visits (and played with the Grateful Dead back in the day), the Capitol Theatre.

Alice Cooper @ Beacon Theatre
Shock rock legend Alice Cooper has been at it for about half a century, and his live shows remain a huge spectacle that have to be seen to be believed. Tonight, he presents “A Paranormal Evening with Alice Cooper.”

Deep Purple, Judas Priest, The Temperance Movement @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Heavy metal as we know it wouldn’t exist without Deep Purple or Judas Priest, and they both have tons of classic songs that still sound timeless today.

Metal Allegiance, Venom Inc, Weapons of Anew, Follow the Awakened, Terrorbyte @ Gramercy Theatre
Tonight, Gramercy Theatre hosts the well-matched pairing of Metal Allegiance — the supergroup of Alex Skolnick (Testament), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Mike Portnoy (Dream Thaeter) and Mark Menghi who do a lot of covers but also have originals — and Venom Inc, the version of the legendary Venom with Mantas and Abaddon (but no Cronos).

Insect Ark, Queen Elephantine, Pandiscordian Necrogenesis @ Saint Vitus
Brooklyn experimental act Insect Ark are riding high off this year’s Marrow Hymns, and tonight they return to hometown venue Saint Vitus.

Mobina Galore, Answering Machine, Ellen and The Degenerates, Stay Inside @ The Well
Winnipeg punk duo Mobina Galore have a melodic yet aggressive sound that’s reminiscent of bands like The Distillers and Against Me! (the latter of whom they’ve toured with), and if you dig those bands, you’ll probably dig MG too.

Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Kid Congo’s CV includes such seminal bands and  The Gun Club, The Cramps and The Bad Seeds, and he brings buckets of panache to his solo work, too.

Eleanor Friedberger @ Dr. Martens Store – Smith Street
Eleanor plays this free show at the Dr. Martens store in Brooklyn as part of the bootmaker’s free summer series. 7 PM, RSVP here.

Wyclef Jean, Funk Flex @ Sony Hall
Former Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean, who released his first album in eight years in 2017, plays the swanky and fairly intimate Sony Hall tonight.

Jesse Harris, Frank Locrasto, Joanna Sternberg @ Union Pool
You may know Jesse Harris as Norah Jones’ guitarist (and co-writer of some of her biggest hits) but he just released solo album Aquarelle and celebrates tonight.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which runs through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

Sydnee Washington: Death of a Bottle Girl @ Caveat
Sydnee Washington (Comedy Central’s Clusterfest, MTV) hosts this one woman revue about her former life as a cocktail waitress and her transition into comedy. Washington is a masterful storyteller, with most of her humor coming from all-too-real personal experiences – her solo show promises to serve up just those kind of memorable anecdotes.

Pop Show @ Union Hall
Ziwe Fumudoh (The Rundown with Robin Thede) hosts this monthly show in which comedians try their hand at pop songwriting, with mixed results. This month’s guests include Cole Escola (Difficult People), Jo Firestone (Joe Pera Talks With You), Natalie Walker (Wilfred – Australia), Matt Rogers (UCB’s Characters Welcome), Daniel Goldberg, & Lorelei Ramirez (Viceland).
