BrooklynVegan + Margin Walker Lost Weekend 2019 at Mohawk
Laura Jane Grace at BV SXSW 2019 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

What's going on Thursday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers, Mercy Union, Control Top @ Bowery Ballroom
Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace put out her first solo album last year, Bought To Rot, and it strikes a great balance between the punky stuff you expect from Against Me! and the more singer/songwriter side you expect from a solo debut. Laura and her backing band The Devouring Mothers (including Against Me! drummer Atom Willard) are also great live, and this show has two worthy openers: Gaslight Anthem/Scandals offshoot Mercy Union and Philly punk trio Control Top, whose recently released Covert Contracts is one of 2019’s finest punk debuts.

Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets @ Beacon Theatre
Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason’s band Saucerful of Secrets perform material from the classic Syd Barett period (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets), and though Roger Waters and David Gilmour’s shows may be bigger spectacles, this tour — which is the band’s first in North America — is your best chance to see a show dedicated to that era. Mason’s band includes Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp, Lee Harris of Ian Dury & the Blockheads, composer Dom Beken (who frequently collaborated with Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright) and Guy Pratt, who became Floyd’s bass player in the post-Waters era. They’re playing Beacon Theatre tonight and tomorrow.

Jeremy Enigk, Tomo Nakayama @ Le Poisson Rouge
Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk’s 2017 solo album Ghosts was his best, most fleshed-out work in a while, cut from a similar cloth as SDRE’s classic How It Feels To Be Something On. He had mostly been playing solo shows to support it, but last year he went on a full-band tour to celebrate the reissue of his 1996 debut Return of the Frog Queen and now he’s doing his first-ever full-band tour supporting Ghosts.

True Widow, The Men, Blush @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Doomy band True Widow are playing a few East Coast shows this year, including Brooklyn tonight with local punk staples The Men.

The Coathangers, Big Bite, High Waisted @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Atlanta garage punks The Coathangers are on the road behind this year’s The Devil You Know. Having played Asbury Park last night, they’re hitting Brooklyn tonight.

Dark Tea, Blush, Cyrus Gengras, Waist @ ALPHAVILLE
Gary Canino plays in a few NYC bands, like the Feelies-esque Rips, but makes very charming, lightly psychedelic folk-pop as Dark Tea. His self-titled debut album is a real treat. His melodies that are often pure sunshine pop, with a twangy few side trips to Laurel Canyon, but his understated vocal style casts welcome cloudy shadows.

Sloppy Jane, Godcaster, Dirt Buyer, Divino Nino @ Baby’s All Right
Sloppy Jane continue their April residency at Baby’s — they’re calling it “If He Was a Dog He Would Be Alright” — and it expect the unexpected (also nudity).

Xylouris White @ Joe’s Pub
Cretan lute player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White (Dirty Three) make folk music but there’s a definitely punk streak in there.

Odonis Odonis, Public Memory, A Place Both Wonderful and Strange @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Montreal band Odonis Odonis like it heavy, dark and synthy which is to say they wouldn’t have sounded out of place opening for Front 242 or KMFDM in 1990. Tonight’s openers A Place Both Wonderful and Strange draw inspiration from Twin Peaks.

Richard Lloyd (of Television), Lenny Kaye @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
As a founding member of NYC icons Television, guitarist Richard Lloyd’s distinctive style has helped shape the sound of punk, alternative and indie rock in the 40+ years since. He plays tonight with another icon: Patti Smith Group guitarist (and Nuggets compiler) Lenny Kaye.

Small Talk w/ Jo Firestone + Chris Gethard, Manolo Moreno, Gary Richardson, Clare O’Kane @ Union Hall
Originally known as “Everyday Decisions,” Jo Firestone’s series is now known as “Small Talk” but remains the same — she and a group of comedians talk to kids about how they make the daily decisions in life.
