Camp Cope at Warsaw flyer

What's Going On Thursday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Camp Cope, Thin Lips, Oceanator @ Warsaw
Camp Cope released our #1 album of 2018, so needless to say we are very excited to be presenting this show tonight, which is the Australian band’s biggest headlining show in NYC yet. Thin Lips and Oceantor are both well-matched openers, so get there on time and see the whole triple bill!

Sunn O))), Papa M @ Brooklyn Steel
Drone metal masters Sunn O))) have a new album out this week, and they bring their intense, cloaked, and fog-drenched live show to NYC tonight in support of it.

Hot Water Music, Errortype: 11, Iron Chic @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Gravelly-voiced punk greats Hot Water Music are on the road playing two of their most loved albums in full, Caution and No Division. Tonight’s Caution night in Brooklyn, and tomorrow’s No Division night. Likeminded newer band Iron Chic and the reunited Errortype:11 open both NYC shows, and that’s a pretty amazing triple bill.

HEALTH, Youth Code, Pictureplane @ Elsewhere Hall
Noise pop-turned-industrial rock band HEALTH are having a busy year with their great new album VOL. 4 :: SLAVES OF FEAR out now, as well as a handful of collaborative singles with other cool artists. One of those artists is EBM duo Youth Code, who are also opening their tour, which hits Brooklyn tonight with additional support from Pictureplane. Should be a nicely dark, industrial-tinged night all around.

Nile Rodgers & CHIC @ The Capitol Theatre
In addition to opening for Cher this year, disco (and more) legend Nile Rodgers and his classic band CHIC are also playing this smaller headlining show. Expect tons of classics, and maybe some newer stuff too (like Nile’s Daft Punk collab).

BC35 Volume 2 record release – The 35 yr Anniversary Of BC Studio: Live Skull, White Hills & more @ Market Hotel
Last year, underground NYC music producer Martin Bisi celebrated the 35th anniversary of his BC Studio (that he co-founded with Brian Eno and Bill Laswell) with a compilation album of music recorded at BC Studio in January 2016, and last week he followed it with a sequel, BC35: Volume Two. This is the release show for the album, which features Live Skull (who are now officially back and working on their first album in 30 years), White Hills, and other musicians from the new comp including “former and current members of Sonic Youth, Swans, Cop Shoot Cop, Parlor Walls, Art Gray Noizz Quintet, Alice Donut, and more.”

Tribeca Film Festival
The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival gets underway today and one of Thursday’s hightlights is a screening for Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men with all living members of the band in attendance.

Oh Land @ Le Poisson Rouge
Oh Land releases her new, Doveman-produced album Family Tree on May 3, which features Devendra Banhart and more. Tonight’s show is in the round.

Girlpool, Hatchie, Gemma @ Bowery Ballroom
With this year’s What Chaos is Imaginary, Girlpool went from stripped down folk to a much bigger sound, incorporating synths, drum machines and shoegazy sounds. Tonight’s show is with dreampop act Hatchie who at times sounds a little like The Cocteau Twins.

Kirin J Callinan, Faux Real @ Baby’s All Right
Kirin is generally known for being a wildman, both in stage presence and in his over-the-top music styles, but both songs we’ve heard from his forthcoming album Return to Center sound rather poppy and restrained, including a cover of The Waterboys’ “The Whole of the Moon.”

Sloppy Jane, Sugarlife, Ember & His Orchestra @ Baby’s All Right
Sloppy Jane wrap up their April residency at Baby’s — they’re calling it “If He Was a Dog He Would Be Alright” — and it expect the unexpected (also nudity).

Martin Rev, Plastic Ivy, Nick Klein (DJ), Alex From Queens (DJ), Camille BWR (DJ) @ Public Records
Catching the Suicide co-founder, who still puts on an intense show at age 71, is a good excuse to go check out new Gowanus venue Public Records and its state-of-the-art soundsystem.

Anvil, Don Jamieson, Archer Nation, DJ Alex Kayne @ Saint Vitus
Canadian metal underdogs Anvil got a big boost after the release of the 2008 documentary on their storied career, and they continue to enjoy a solid level of success today. Their current tour hits Brooklyn tonight.

As Friends Rust, Ageist, Somerset Thrower, Perfect World @ The Kingsland
Gainesville punk vets As Friends Rust were initially around in the late ’90s and early ’00s, but they reunited a few years back and continue to play shows today. Opening this one is Ageist (mem Mind Over Matter, Primitive Weapons, Thursday, The Hold Steady) and alt-rock-ish Long Island punks Somerset Thrower.

Gloria Gaynor @ Sony Hall
Gloria Gaynor may not be a hitmaker like she was in the ’70s and ’80s but she, uh, survived that era just fine and it’s still a treat to hear her powerhouse pipes in person today.
