Bedouine, Daughter of Swords @ Rough Trade
Bedouine’s upcoming album Bird Songs of a Killjoy is a must-hear for fans of ’70s folk (or fans of the new Weyes Blood album), and though it’s not out until June 21 (the release date was pushed back recently), she celebrates it in NYC tonight. Daughter of Swords (Alexandra Sauser-Monnning of Mountain Man) opens and her set is not to miss.
Modern Life is War, Krimewatch, Druids @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Iowa melodic hardcore greats Modern Life Is War reunited a few years back, and they’ve stayed active both in the studio and on the road. They’re always worth catching, and tonight’s bill has cool openers too.
Nicholas Dawson (Bookworms), The Negro Subversive, Rafael Sanchez, Don McKenzie @ Issue Project Room
DeForrest Brown Jr. curates ‘Okonkwo Weeps In Exile,’ a new “rhythmic opera” featuring producer Nicholas Dawson (Bookworms), drummer Donald Sturge Anthony Mckenzie II, poet and “enlightened educator” Rafael Sanchez, with text from Guerilla essayist His Triumphant Blackness: The Negro Subversive.
JJUUJJUU, Max Pain and The Groovies, Heavy Birds @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Phil Pirrone is the cofounder of the Desert Daze festival but also makes heady psych as JJUUJJUU. His 2018 debu Zionic Mud is a heavy trip that incorporates all manner of sonic weapons in its psychic warfare, managing to be groovy (in a Can sort of way), blissed-out, blasting, and beautiful. Sometimes all at the same time.
Nona Hendryx, Vernon Reid @ MetroTech Commons
Hendryx, who was a member of Labelle when they released “Lady Marmelade,” gets help from Living Colour guitarist today to kick off the 2019 edition of BAM R&B Festival. Noon start, free.
Greg Ashley (of Gris Gris), Vestments, Hamish Kilgour, Wildly @ Union Pool
Greg Ashley fronted cult group Gris Gris in the ’00s and currently makes psych-pop that recalls Harry Nilsson and The Kinks. Hamish Kilgour is best known as drummer for The Clean but fronted NYC band The Mad Scene in the ’90s and ’00s.
Empire of the Sun @ Webster Hall
Relive the innocent days of 2009 when Obama was still fresh in the White House and Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream” was inescapable. They’re celebrating their debut album, which that song is from, at these Webster Hall shows.
The Losers Lounge: Tribute to ABBA @ Joe’s Pub
Joe McGinty has led The Loser’s Lounge since the ’90s, paying tribute to a different artist every month with a cavalcade of guest vocalists. This weekend should be an especially good time as they’ll be singing the songs of ABBA.
Local Natives, Middle Kids @ Brooklyn Steel
Local Natives are far removed from the buzz of their instantly-loved debut Gorilla Manor, but the rhythmic indie pop band are still going strong and have the new album Violet Street out this year on Loma Vista. Their tour with Middle Kids hits Brooklyn Steel tonight and tomorrow.
The Rural Alberta Advantage, Esther Rose @ Mercury Lounge
Canadian indie staples The Rural Alberta Advantage are promising to try out some new tunes on this tour, which hits Mercury Lounge tonight and helps celebrate the NYC venue’s 25th anniversary.
Triptych (composed by Bryce Dessner) @ BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music
Bryce Dessner composed the music for Triptych which is inspired by the life and art of Robert Mapplethorpe and features ensemble Roomful of Teeth.
Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theatre
Jerry’s monthly residency at Beacon Theatre, which wraps up at the end of the summer, continues with two shows tonight.
