What's going on Thursday?

stone-roses

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Stone Roses, Rodrigo y Gabriela @ Madison Square Garden
The Stone Roses’ 1989 debut album is a stone cold classic of the Madchester era, spawning such singalongs as “I Wanna Be Adored,” “She Bangs the Drums,” “Waterfall” and “I Am the Resurection.” Apart from post-debut single “Fools Gold / What the World is Waiting For,” everything else they’ve done (including two new singles) have been  shruggy. But that debut album. This is the first time The Stone Roses have played NYC in over 20 years. We wish it was a more appropriate opener (Happy Mondays? Inspiral Carpets?) but you may never get this chance again.

Paul Simon @ Forest Hills Stadium
Paul Simon’s new album Stranger to Stranger is his best in a long time, which makes it even more exciting than usual to see him live. But new stuff aside, he’s sure to load his set with favorites from Simon & Garfunkel and his very fruitful solo career. This is the first of two nights at Forest Hills Stadium, Paul’s first time at the Queens venue since 1970.

Black Mountain, Ruby the Hatchet @ Bowery Ballroom
Canada’s Black Mountain continue their unique mix of sludgy riffs, indie rock, and more on this year’s excellent IV. Their tour hits NYC tonight, and it’s worth showing up early for Ruby the Hatchet, who also have plenty of Sabbath and Zeppelin in their sound.

Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness @ Jones Beach
While we wish Panic! at the Disco weren’t co-headlining, and this crazy large venue isn’t as fun as the places Weezer’s recent NYC shows were (Warsaw and Rough Trade), any chance to see Weezer is a good one. Their last two records were pretty well received as far as post-’90s Weezer albums go (even if they have some stinkers like “Back to the Shack” and “Thank God For Girls”), and when they play the old favorites, it still rocks. They do it again in the NYC-area on Saturday in NJ.

Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer @ ISSUE Project Room
Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo is teaming up with visual artist Leah Singer tonight for a collaborative piece called “Sight Unseen.” From the description: “Sight Unseen consists of a guitar suspended from a rope in the middle of the performance space. Wireless equipment is used so the guitar can move around the space un-tethered from the amplifier. Projection screens are placed site-specific in the space, sometimes two screens facing each other, or two screens side by side on one plane of the room, or three screens with one used as an entry way. There is no fixed stage but rather the bare floor with no separation between audience and performer. The overall intention is to create an environment where the performers and the audience are engaged in an immersive sight and sound experience that is more circular than linear, allowing for personal interpretation rather than fixed exposition.”

Paul de Jong (of The Books) @ National Sawdust
Last year Paul de Jong released IF, which is pretty in line with The Books’ classic material, with modern classical arrangements, glitch, and spoken word samples. Tonight’s his first of two NYC shows this weekend.

Sepalcure, CRi , Dave Q @ Good Room
Sepalcure is the duo of electronic musicians Machinedrum and Braille, and they returned earlier this year with a new album, Folding Time, on Hotflush. Tonight’s their first NYC show since its release.

Lithuania, Alexander F, Leapling @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Lithuania is the duo of Eric Slick (of Dr. Dog) and Dominic Angelella (who’s been filling in with mewithoutYou lately), and they make their return to NYC tonight. There’s pretty cool local support from Alexander F (a band featuring members of Rubblebucket, Bear In Heaven, and Delicate Steve) and Leapling.

Heaven, Roya, ET Anderson @ Mercury Lounge
NYC band Heaven have been regulars on the NYC scene for years, making superior post-VU shoegaze and featuring members who regularly back Dean Wareham and others as well. Tonight they play with Roya (members or Habibi, Grooms and Golden Triangle) makng for a good night of hazy rock.

George Gray Groove Coalition, Jazzmeia Horn @ MetroTech Commons
Part of the lunchtime BAM R&B Festival, today features George Gray who has sat behind the kit with Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Janet Jackson and more. Also playing: singer Jazzmeia Horn who won the 2015 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition. Free

Steve Gunn @ Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre
Steve Gunn’s new album Eyes on the Lines may be the mellow bliss-out guitar album of the summer, radiating warm vibes, impressive chops and Steve’s keen observational lyrical style. His band is seriously talented, which should make for a nice night at The Cap’s small sideroom venue.

75 Dollar Bill, Little Black Egg @ Union Pool
Guitarist Che Chen and percussionist Rick Brown make jammy, drony music that draws from a variety of worldwide influences. Brown’s unusual style here (he sits on a wooden box that is also his primary instrument) makes things even more interesting live. Their new LP, Wood / Metal / Plastic / Pattern / Rhythm / Rock, is well worth checking out and serves as a good descriptor for what 75 Dollar Bill Do.

China Crisis @ Iridium
Liverpool’s China Crisis took the ’70s yacht rock aesthetic and brought it into the age of mid-’80s New Romantics. Their glossy pop still sounds pretty good today.

Kimya Dawson, Daphne, Crosslegged @ Sunnyvale
As one half of Moldy Peaches, Kimya Dawson bridged NYC’s anti-folk scene with the city’s rock resurgence of the early ’00s. While she hasn’t put out a record in a while, she’s still a very compelling performer.

The English Beat, Soul Asylum @ Irving Plaza
This double bill tour is an odd one — it’s hard to imagine these bands touring together back in the day (The English Beat broke up before Soul Asylum formed) but nostalgia smooths over everything it seems.
