Winter Jazzfest
The 2020 edition of Winter Jazzfest gets underway in earnest tonight with three separate events: BBC DJ Gilles Peterson hosts his annual “introducing” show of new British jazz talent including Moses Boyd, Poppy Ajudha, and Sarathy Korwar at Le Poisson Rouge (Kokoroko were supposed to play but had visa issues); Lee Fields & The Expression play Brooklyn Bowl; and Mark Guiliana’s Beat Music plays Bowery Ballroom.

Smif-n-Wessun, Black Moon @ Gramercy Theatre
Brooklyn rap icons Smif-n-Wessun play this hometown show celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Da Shinin’, accompanied by fellow NYC rap greats and Boot Camp Clik affiliates Black Moon.

Yonatan Gat, Eastern Medicine Singers, Jaimie Branch, Brian Chase, Jonathan Toubin @ The Dance
Onetime Monotonix leader Yonatan Gat put together this eclectic lineup of music that includes his new band The Medicine Singers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase, trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and DJ Jonathan Toubin.

Toth, Mal Devisa, Beau @ Rough Trade
Brooklyn songwriter and Rubblebucket co-founder Alex Toth heads to Rough Trade behind his solo debut Practice Magic And Seek Professional Help When Necessary, released last year. For this show, he’ll be joined by fellow NYC act Beau, and Massachusetts-based songwriter Mal Devisa.

NPR’s Ask Me Another with Justin Long and Marina Franklin @ The Bell House
NPR’s trivia/comedy/music show Ask Me Another, hosted by Ophira Eisenberg and featuring musician Jonathan Coulton tapes live tonight with guests Justin Long and comedian Marina Franklin as guests.

Junius Paul trio (w/ Makaya McCraven & Marquis Hill), Brandee Younger Trio (w/ Dezron Douglas and Russell Carter) & more @ Public Records
The very cool Chicago jazz label International Anthem is throwing an unofficial Winter Jazzfest sideshow at Public Records tonight, featuring performances by bassist Junius Paul (in trio with drummer Makaya McCraven and trumpeter Marquis Hill) and the Brandee Younger Trio (w/ Dezron Douglas and Russell Carter); DJ sets by Total Refreshment Centre director Lexus Blondin and International Anthem co-founder Scottie Mcniece, and Vocalo radio’s Ayana Contreras; and more unannounced guests. International Anthem will also be selling theirr full catalog at this show, and not at any other WJF show.
