What’s going on Thursday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Charlotte Adigery, Felicia Douglass @ Nublu 151
Charlotte Adigéry has French-Caribbean roots but lives in Ghent, Belgium where she studied art and dabbled in dance music. Like any interesting beatmaker in Belgium, she crossed paths with the Dewaele brothers, of Soulwax and 2ManyDJs fame, who signed her to their DeeWee label and helped her make her two EPs. This is her first-ever North American show and she’ll soon be on tour with Metronomy.
Calexico and Iron & Wine, Half Waif @ Webster Hall
Last year, Calexico and Iron & Wine released their first collaborative record in 14 years, Years to Burn, and right now they’re supporting it on tour and hitting NYC tonight. Opening is Half Waif, who just announced her new album The Caretaker.
Rapsody, Sa-Roc, Heather Victoria @ Elsewhere Hall
Rapsody is still riding high off the strength of 2019’s excellent Eve, which was frequently recognized as one of the best of last year (and, in some cases, last decade), and tonight she brings her “A Black Woman Created This Tour” tour in support of it to Brooklyn. Direct support comes from the Rhymesayers-signed DC rapper Sa-Roc, who recently released her great new single “Hand of God,” and R&B singer Heather Victoria opens.
Empath, Momma, Spirit Was @ Elsewhere Zone One
Philly noise punks Empath are back out on the road supporting last year’s Active Listening: Night on Earth, and tonight’s show is also LA indie rockers Momma’s NYC debut and features local support from LVL UP offshoot Spirit Was.
Bonny Light Horseman, Erin Rae @ Rough Trade
Bonny Light Horseman — the new folk rock supergroup of Anais Mitchell, Eric D Johnson (Fruit Bats), and The National/Craig Finn/Hiss Golden Messenger collaborator Josh Kaufman — recently released their self-titled debut album, which features a mix of originals and traditional folk songs (including the one they’re named after). They celebrate it in Brooklyn tonight with quality support from Erin Rae.
John Doe, Kristin Hersh, Grant Lee Phillips @ The Cutting Room
Throwing Muses leader Kristin Hersh is on the road with former tourmate Grant Lee Phillips and X frontman John Doe, which is a reprisal of their Exile Follies shows they did years ago. Should be a nice evening.
Steve Gunn, William Tyler, Special Guests @ Union Pool
It’s night 3 of Steve Gunn and William Tyler’s four-show residency at Union Pool, featuring Steve Gunn and William Tyler begin their four-show Union Pool residency at Union Pool featuring “solo performances, duets,” and they’ll “be welcoming many’a special guest friends to the stage to join them.”
Valley Lodge, The Benevolent Dictators @ Mercury Lounge
When Dave Hill isn’t busy making people laugh or making black metal with Witch Taint, he fronts power-pop band Valley Lodge whose song “Go” is the theme to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
You can also find quality entertainment on almost any night of the week at: Barbès bar and performance space in Park Slope, LunÀtico in Bed Stuy, Nublu in the East Village, Blue Note jazz club in the West Village, The Stone in multiple locations, Comedy Cellar in the West Village, and Q.E.D. comedy club in Astoria.
