Herbie Hancock

What's going on Thursday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Herbie Hancock, The Robert Glasper Experiment, Jamie Lidell @ Prospect Park
It’s the final ticketed “benefit” show of this summer’s BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn Festival with jazz legend Herbie Hancock headlining. Herbie’s career has taken him all over the place, from his hard bop beginnings in the ’60s to helping pioneer fusion in the ’70s, and he’s still active today. His band tonight includes James Genus, Trevor Lawrence, Jr., Lionel Loueke, and Terrace Martin. This show has two great modern openers: jazz-hop pianist Robert Glasper and soul revivalist Jamie Lidell.

Drive Like Jehu, The Jay Vons @ The Bell House
While members of Drive Like Jehu are rarely not active, the highly-influential post-hardcore band remained inactive since breaking up in 1995. They got back together not long ago for some killer shows, and tonight’s their first of two shows in NYC.

Belly @ Bowery Ballroom
Having been a member of Throwing Muses and The Breeders, Tanya Donnelly found ’90s alt-rock success with Belly whose debut album Star spawned hit singles “Feed the Tree” and “Slow Dog.” (Both that and second LP King still sound good today.) Twenty years after breaking up, Belly are back and play their second of two-sold out Bowery shows tonight. It’s “An Evening With” show, no opener and two sets. 9 PM start.

Zig Zags, Pink Mexico, Dirty Fences @ Baby’s All Right
Somewhere between garage punk and zoned out space rock. The band’s new album, Running Out of Red, was released via John Dwyer’s Castle Face label.

Kyle Craft, Mass Gothic @ Mercury Lounge
Former Gashcat singer Kyle Craft struck out on his own and released Dolls of Highland on Sub Pop, which gained him comparisons to Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Meat Loaf, and more. His labelmates Mass Gothic (ex-Hooray for Earth) open the show.

Torres @ MoMA
The MoMA Nights series brings music to the museum’s Sculpture Garden every Thursday in July and August from 5:30-8 PM. It’s free with museum admission. Tonight’s show has the great grunge-folk singer Torres.

Mr. Scruff, Jacques Renault, Max McFerren, Vito & Druzzi (The Rapture DJs), Lemonade @ Output
UK electronic producer Andrew Carthy has been making infectious dance music since the late ’90s, most of it for acclaimed label Ninja Tune, most notably with his hit “Get a Move On.” He headlines this night of spinners that should bring strong early ’00s vibes.

Mariachi El Bronx @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
When they aren’t making ripping punk rock as The Bronx, members use this project to dish out their take on mariachi music.

Hoops, B Boys, David West w/ Bob Jones @ Shea Stadium
Bloomington, IA band Hoops, whose dreampop is not dissimilar to Wild Nothing, are just about to release their debut EP for Fat Possum. They are matched tonight with Brooklyn’s B Boys (who owe more than a little to late-’70s Wire), and Australia’s David West who was the main force behind Lace Curtain (DFA, Mexican Summer) and plays tonight with Eaters’ Bob Jones.

EZTV, Lionlimb, Double Winter @ Silent Barn
Brooklyn’s EZTV make the kind of effortless, jangly guitar pop that was a staple of college radio in the mid-’80s. The band’s new album, High in Place, is out next month on Captured Tracks.

RIPS, Fraidycat, Cheek Meat, Fax Machine America @ Sunnyvale Brooklyn
Rips make scuffed-up, post-VU mutant pop that is indebted to late-’70s New York (Feelies, Television, Student Teachers) and does very well by the comparison. Their debut album, produced by Parquet Courts’ Austin Brown, is due out (hopefully) later this year.

Elk City @ HiFi
Long-running NYC band Elk City make very appealing guitar pop and their lineup is currently bolstered by Luna guitar-slinger Sean Eden.

Barbra Streisand @ Barclays Center
Brooklyn’s own Barbra Streisand plays the borough’s biggest room tonight.
