The Who

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Who, Joan Jett @ Madison Square Garden
The Who have more than enough classic songs to fill an entire setlist, and they always make sure to load their shows with the fan favorites. That, plus the fact that Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are still more lively than people half their age, make them a must-see. This show (rescheduled from 2015) is the only date of their tour with the great Joan Jett opening. The Who also play Prudential Center later this month.

DIIV, Dog Island, EZTV @ Market Hotel
DIIV begin their three-night, sold out run at Market Hotel tonight. If you’re going, be sure to check out Dog Island which is the new band from Michelle Zauner of Little Big League/Japanese Breakfast & Alanna Nuala Higgins of Moon.

Force Field 10th Anniversary feat. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Martin Courtney, The Blow, Neon Indian (DJ set), Guerilla Toss @ Baby’s All Right
Indie publicity company Force Field PR turns 10 and they’re celebrating with this shindig features artists from their roster present and past, as well as some friends.

Frameworks, Donovan Wolfington, Descender @ Saint Vitus
Frameworks bring back the sounds of late ’90s screamo, but as their new Time Spent EP proves, they’re more than just revival. They just inked a deal with Deathwish, who will release their new full length later this year. Their fuzz punky tourmates (and past Topshelf labelmates) Donovan Wolfington are worth catching too.

Bell Witch, Wrekmeister Harmonies, Uniform, Shredded Nerve @ Acheron
Bell Witch and Wrekmeister Harmonies are touring in support of their great 2015 albums, the doomy Four Phantoms and the arty guest-filled Night of Your Ascension, respectively. The tour is extra special because Bell Witch are also serving as Wrekmeister Harmonies’ backing band. Both openers veer towards the harsh noise realm.

Miike Snow (in-the-round), Beau @ Le Poisson Rouge
Swedish band Miike Snow release their third album, titled iii, this week and cleverly play this release show tonight (3/3). That’s a lot of threes.

Porches, Frankie Cosmos @ Space Ninety 8
Did you it’s Vinyl Appreciation Weekend? Neither did we but that’s why close-knit bands Porches and Frankie Cosmos are playing this more-than-an-Urban-Outfitters tonight. It’s a free show (7-9PM) and you can get 15% off all vinyl in the UO’s downstairs record shop.

Radiation City, Deep Sea Diver @ Rough Trade
Portland, OR pop band Radiation City released the alluring Synesthetica last month and their tour with fellow Pacific Northwest band Deep Sea Diver makes for a cool double bill.

Skream @ Output
Back in the mid-2000s, Skream helped pioneer dubstep over in the UK before it became a huge American phenomenon, but these days he’s experimenting with different sounds. He takes over Output from open to close tonight.

Talib Kweli @ Blue Note
Talib Kweli has been a staple of New York rap since the ’90s and he still puts out quality records. Tonight he continues his residency at the Blue Note with a live band. There are 8 PM and 10:30 PM shows.

Wolfmother, Deap Vally @ Webster Hall
Wolfmother have been bringing back ’70s hard rock for over a decade now, and despite some major lineup changes, their fanbase is still loyal. Tonight’s show is sold out.

Shilpa Ray, One Prayer One Sin, Cut Worms @ Palisades
Shilpa Ray is a local regular, offering up a warped take on punk blues. Her latest release is 2015’s Last Year’s Savage.

SWMRS, The Frights, Surf Rock is Dead, Slonk Donkerson @ The Studio at Webster Hall
The Burger Records-signed garage rockers SWMRS’ biggest claim to fame is that Billie Joe Armstrong’s son Joey is their drummer, but they’ve got catchy tunes too. As do The Frights, whose recent debut album was produced by a member of FIDLAR.

Molly Ringwald @ Birdland
John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink just celebrated its 30th anniversary and tonight its star Molly Ringwald sings cabaret. She has been known to cover “(Don’t You) Forget About Me” from The Breakfast Club. 8:30 PM and 11 PM shows.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which just got extended through May.

Curtis Harding, Nico Yaryan, Roya @ Brooklyn Bowl
Atlanta’s Curtis Harding soul/blues artist has serious magnetism, pipes and chops, as can be heard on his 2014 debut album which came out via Burger, and experience live tonight.

Doug Loves Movies @ Gramercy Theatre
Doug loves weed, and he also digs cinema. He’ll be indlulging the latter — taping his Doug Loves Movies podcast — with surprise guests tonight. Sold out.
