Let's Eat Grandma at Berlin
Let’s Eat Grandma at Berlin, 2016 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Yo La Tengo @ Town Hall
This is not your average Yo La Tengo show. Billed as “And Then Yo La Tengo Turned Itself Inside Out,” it finds Ira, Georgia and James working with a group of improvisational musicians: Chad Taylor (drums), Amy Garapic (drums), Zeena Parkins (harp), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Vincent Chancey (french horn), Roswell Rudd (trombone), Daniel Carter (saxophone) and Taylor Ho Bynum (trumpet).

Patrick Watson, The Westerlies @ BRIC House
Montreal orchestral pop maestro Patrick Wilson plays the “BRIC House Sessions” tonight

Julianna Barwick, Mas Ysa, Mankind, fantasy league, Nathan Phillips @ First Unitarian Congregational Society
Ambient pop artist Julianna Barwick headlines this installment of the Ambient Church series, which is curated by Brian Sweeny of Body Actualized Center, and co-presented by the 38nyc label.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Baked, Drawing Boards @ Baby’s All Right
Australia’s RBCF make jangly, literate guitar pop in a post-Smiths kind of way and were terrific at our SXSW day show last week. Tonight they headline Baby’s following two nights opening for Tennis.

Stef Chura, Scully, Emily Reo @ Mercury Lounge
Steph Chura makes hooky indie rock and she has a way with a turn-of-phrase, too. Her new album was recently released on Urinal Cake, the label that put out the first Protomartyr album.

Let’s Eat Grandma @ Rough Trade
Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth recreate the bewitching vibe on Let’s Eat Grandma’s debut album with a lot instrument-switching, bouncing between keyboards, guitar, bouzouki, recorder, sax and drums, often mid-song, and sometimes taking over the other’s keyboard part mid-song. Chaotic? Sometimes, but when it all comes together — like on “Eat Shiitake Mushrooms” — it’s something to behold.

Nouvelle Vague @ Rough Trade
Parisian band Nouvelle Vague, whose name means “New Wave” in French and “Bossa Nova” in Portuguese, made a splash in the mid-’00s with their kitschy, jazzy (often sublime) lounge covers of early ’80s punk and post-punk tunes. They haven’t changed their MO but it’s still an effective gimmick.

Gabriella Cohen, Alex Izenberg, Reverberation Radio (DJ) @ Berlin
Australian artist Gabriella Cohen makes warm, smokey guitar pop, steeped in the Velvet Underground and vintage soul (it’s a sound she describes as “pink”). While on tour with Foxygen, she’s playing this intimate headlining show.

Pontiak, PC Worship, Heavy Birds, Rhyton @ Alphaville
The very trippy psych-rockers Pontiak are releasing a new album, Dialectic of Ignorance, this week on Thrill Jockey. They celebrate it in NYC tonight, with some pretty great openers.

Dave x AJ Tracey @ SOB’s
Rising UK MCs Dave and AJ Tracey are currently on a US/Canada tour, which recently had them in Austin for SXSW (where they played FADER Fort). They make it to NYC tonight.

Show Me The Body, Leven Kali, Taco (DJ), special guest @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Punk-rap band Show Me The Body release a new mixtape this week, but first they bring their live show — which is known for getting pretty crazy — to The Studio at Webster Hall.

Jose James, Corey King @ Bowery Ballroom
After years making vocal jazz and neo-soul, Jose James gets more electronic and Drake-y on his latest album, Love in a Time of Madness.

Palm, Shimmer, Beth Israel, Macula Dog @ Sunnyvale
Palm mix math rock with the 2000s-era weirdo-indie of stuff like Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective, and they just signed to Carpark. Parquet Courts’ pals Beth Israel are worth catching too.
