What's going on Thursday?

PJ Harvey at Terminal 5
PJ Harvey at Terminal 5, 2016 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

PJ Harvey @ Brooklyn Steel
From her raw, rock roots to her uniquely folky recent material, PJ Harvey has experimented with a handful of different sounds and she’s a master of whatever mode she’s in. Seeing her live is a real treat, and so far NYC gets two chances this year. This is the first, at the recently-opened venue Brooklyn Steel.

Methyl Ethel, Blonder, Shana Falana @ Baby’s All Right
Australian Dreampop band Methyl Ethel, who are working on their new album for 4AD, headline this all-around solid bill (we like shoegazy Shana Falana too).

Hurray for the Riff Raff, Ron Gallo, Breanna Barbara @ Bowery Ballroom
Hurray for the Riff Raff’s excellent new LP The Navigator expands upon the alt-country sounds of HFTRR’s earlier releases and adds in a significant influence from main member Alynda Segarra’s Puerto Rican roots. Tonight she plays a sold-out Bowery Ballroom show with New West-signed rocker Ron Gallo and dark blues singer Breanna Barbara.

Tribeca Film Festival
The 2017 TFF kicks off in earnest today, with two dozen or so films showing around the city.

Philip Glass Ensemble @ Town Hall
Part of the Tribeca Film Festival, the Philip Glass Ensemble will be performing Glass’ interpretation of Jean Cocteau’s masterpiece La Belle et la Bête live to the film with an intro from Glass and documentarian Errol Morris.

Quilt, The Shacks, Sennott @ Union Temple of Brooklyn
Boston/NYC’s excellent Quilt headline this show at Park Slope’s Union Temple, which is presented by Murmrr (and they’re calling the venue Murmrr Ballroom for their shows).

Danny Brown, Dave East, Nick Catchdubs, Sean Cee @ Webster Hall
Rap eccentric Danny Brown returned last year with the excellent Atrocity Exhibition, and he’s stayed prolific with some new songs (and quality guest verses) this year. He’s in NYC tonight for a free (with RSVP) show that also includes classic-style New York rap devotee Dave East, Fool’s Gold co-founder Nick Catchdubs, and DJ Sean Cee.

Witch Taint (w/ Dave Hill) @ WFMU Monty Hall
In 2004 comedian, musician and gadabout Dave Hill created alter-ego Lance, a teenager living with his parents in Gary, IN who also happened to be the lead singer and sole member of “the most extreme, brutal, and Satanic black metal band of all-time,” There’s a lot more to this story, and you can hear it all — and see Witch Taint live — tonight.

Surfer Blood, Lazyeyes @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Florida’s poppy indie rockers Surfer Blood released Snowdonia earlier this year and slide into Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. Before that, though…

Surfer Blood @ Rough Trade
…they’ll play a free acoustic session in Rough Trade’s SONOS Room. You’ll need to purchase their album at Rough Trade to attend.

The Coathangers, Snail Mail, SIGNAL, DJ IUD Soundsystem @ Sunnyvale
Atlanta garage punks The Coathangers are back out on the road, and tonight they’re in NYC with fast-rising local band Snail Mail.

Sam Outlaw, Dori Freeman @ Mercury Lounge
Country singer Sam Outlaw recently released his new album Tenderheart, and he’s currently supporting it on tour. He’s in NYC tonight.

Boogie, Kaiydo, Kemba, Michael Christmas @ SOB’s
Pigeons & Planes have been throwing their ‘No Ceilings’ shows in NYC for a while (like the Noname show and the Kamaiyah show last year), and now they’re presenting the first-ever ‘No Ceilings’ tour. It’s got a very cool lineup of some pretty diverse rappers.

Testament, Sepultura, Prong, Ashes Of Your Enemy @ Starland Ballroom
Thrash legends Testament returned in October with Brotherhood of the Snake, one of the finer albums to come out by a veteran thrash band last year. They’re on tour now with the Cavalera-less version of Sepultura and NYC metal vets Prong. They’re in Jersey tonight and play Long Island on Saturday.

PAT Party: JD Samson, Amber ValentineTim Sweeney, Gabrielle Kwarteng, Guy Williams, Robi D. Light
It’s the April edition of JD Samson’s monthly PAT party, promising “good vibes, good sound, video projection by local video artists and DJ’s that aren’t afraid to go deep.”

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
