What's going on Thursday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Wire, Norman Westberg @ Baby’s All Right
Celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, Wire are like a shark — moving forward constantly with very little interest in nostalgia. They released a very good new album this year — Silver/Lead — and for fans of their mid-’80s period, they’ve been playing “Ahead” and “Over Theirs” (both from The Ideal Copy) on this tour. Swans guitarist Norman Westberg opens this, their first of three Baby’s shows.

The Church, The Helio Sequence @ The Bell House
Australian alt rock legends The Church continue to age gracefully on Man Woman Life Death Infinity, their forthcoming 26th LP. You’ll get some of that new record, and probably favorites like “Under the Milky Way,” “Reptile” and “Metropolis,” tonight.

Sally Can’t Dance (New York Dolls tribute with Sylvian Sylvian, Jonathan Toubin, Lenny Kaye, Walter Lure & more) @ Bowery Electric
This is the third anniversary party for NYC rock n’ roll party Sally Cant Dance which tonight doubles as a tribute to the New York Dolls, featuring actual Doll Sylvian Sylvian, plus Lenny Kaye, Walter Lure (Heartbreakers), DJ Jonathan Toubin and more.

Lydia Lunch, Jesse Lynch, Michael Foster, Matt Nelson, Mostly Other People Do The Killing @ The Park Church Co-Op
Meanwhile over at Park Church co-op, another NYC legend, Lydia Lunch, headlines this “night of experimental jazz” that’s a benefit for ZIEMIA, a public art project by Martynka Wawrzyniak.

Pharoah Sanders @ Birdland
A true jazz icon, Pharoah Sanders remains a force at age 76 and continues his five-night Birdland residency with two shows tonight.

The New York Film Festival
It’s the opening night of the 55th New York Film Festival, with things kicking off with the premiere of Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying, a long-in-the-making, quasi-sequel to Hal Ashby’s ‘70s classic The Last Detail.

Re-Tros, Brian Hill and the Noh Starrs @ Berlin
Beijing trio Re-TROS just released their new album Before the Applause, a rhythm-heavy mix of Kratrock, DFA-style dance rock, post punk noir, and more. They are a pretty amazing live act and play this intimate show ahead of this weekend’s Modern Sky Festival.

The Growlers @ Brooklyn Bowl
Orange County rock band The Growlers teamed up with The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas who both produced last year’s enjoyable City Club album and released it on his Cult Records label. Tonight’s their first of three shows at Brooklyn Bowl.

Gojira, Converge @ Brooklyn Steel
French prog metal giants Gojira have been on tour all year in support of last year’s Magma, and they return to NYC tonight for a killer double bill with Converge, whose highly anticipated new album The Dusk In Us will be out in November.

“Slug Man” (aka probably Snail Mail), Mallrat @ Silent Barn
Silent Barn’s Fall Fundraiser Week continues tonight, and while we aren’t 100% sure who the headliner is, all clues point to a solo set from recent Matador signees Snail Mail.

Perturbator, Das Mörtal, Protector 101 @ Le Poisson Rouge
France’s Perturbator is among the new group of musicians pulling from ’80s synthwave and John Carpenter scores, with one foot in dance music and another in the metal world. He recently released his new album New World.

Smokepurpp @ Highline Ballroom
Fast-rising auto-tune rapper Smokepurrp celebrates his new Deadstar mixtape with this release show. He plays NYC again next month, opening for Getter at Playstation Theater.

Charly Bliss, Sad13, Bellows @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Sugar-high pop rockers Charly Bliss headline this show, and if you’re going, it’s worth getting there on time for Sad13, the solo project of Speedy Ortiz singer Sadie Dupuis.

Harry Styles, MUNA @ Radio City
Former One Direction member Harry Styes doesn’t just want to look like Mick Jagger, he also pulls from the Stones (and Pink Floyd and Bowie and other classic rock acts) on his debut solo album, which is pretty different from his 1D stuff. He’ll be in NYC for two big MSG shows with Kacey Musgraves in 2018, but first plays this slightly smaller one.

Jim Gaffigan @ Beacon Theatre
While known as the comedian who doesn’t curse (and as the “Hot Pockets guy”), Jim Gaffigan is still one of the funniest comedians around (even if you’re Aunt Linda thinks so too).

Star Wars in Concert (Empire Strikes Back) @ Lincoln Center
Tonight you can catch what is a lot of people’s favorite film in the Star Wars saga, with a live score by the NY Philharmonic.

Pankow, Statiqbloom @ Saint Vitus
Still featuring founding members Maurizio Fasolo and Alex Spalck, Italian industriam/EBM band Pankow bulldoze their way to Brooklyn tonight ahead of their appearance at this weekend’s Cold Waves festival in Chicago.
