Lollapalooza 2017 - Saturday
Alvvays at Lollapalooza 2017 (more by James Richards IV)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Alvvays, Nap Eyes @ Brooklyn Steel
Alvvays new album Antisocialites betters their debut album in pretty much every way. The songs — still in jangly, fuzzy powerpop mode — are stronger, the playing more assured, and the production has just the right level of spiff and shine without ever being slick or syrupy.

METZ, Uniform, Bambara @ Bowery Ballroom
If you like your punk rock, dark, skuzzy, and very very loud, tonight’s an amazing triple bill headlined by Toronto’s METZ, whose new Albini-recorded album Strange Peace just came out on Sub Pop. Get there early for Ben Greenberg’s near-industrial Uniform, and Bambara (who just wrapped up a stint playing in Liars).

The Black Lips, The Nude Party, Diet Choke @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Garage rock vets The Black Lips released the Sean Lennon-produced Satan’s graffiti or God’s art? earlier this year and play tonight atop this likeminded bill of North Carolina’s The Nude Party and Diet Choke (featuring model Ruby Aldridge).

Benjamin Clementine @ Carnegie Hall
After collaborating with Gorillaz earlier this year, UK singer Benjamin Clementine returned this month with his sophomore album, I Tell A Fly, which is a dose of experimental pop that’s really not like much else out there. Carnegie Hall should be a really nice place to see him.

Drive-By Truckers, Strand of Oaks @ White Eagle Hall
Alt-country vets Drive-By Truckers and arena-sized psychedelic folk rockers Strand of Oaks are on the road together, which is a very cool double bill. They play Jersey City tonight and Port Chester tomorrow.

WHY?, Your Dog @ Brooklyn Bazaar
WHY? returned this year with Moh Lhean, which is a fine example of their hip hop-inspired indie rock and a reminder that there’s no band quite like WHY?.

Kaki King featuring the Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra @ Littlefield
Guitar great Kaki King recently released her new album Live at Berklee, which features the Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra. Tonight they celebrate the album together in NYC.

A Guy Called Gerald, Whatever/Whatever, L&L&L Record Club, DJ Palace NYC @ Good Room
UK acid house/techno legend A Guy Called Gerald had a massive hit on his home continent with his 1988 single “Voodoo Ray.” Though he hasn’t released new music in a few years, he has plenty of worthy material to pull from tonight.

Chicano Batman, Khruangbin, The Shacks @ Irving Plaza
This is a pretty cool bill all around, with Jack White-approved Latin rockers Chicano Batman, the groovy genre-defying Khruangbin, and dreamy Big Crown Records signees The Shacks.

Glass Animals, Mick Jenkins, Amber Mark @ Radio City Music Hall
Alt-pop band Glass Animals are headlining this show, and they’ve got two great openers on board. Mick Jenkins’ The Healing Component was one of the finer rap albums of last year, and NYC R&B/soul singer Amber Mark has been on the rise since releasing her 3:33 AM EP this year.

Bruce Springsteen @ Walter Kerr Theatre
If anyone was gonna unseat Hamilton as Broadway’s hardest-to-get ticket, it was Bruce Springsteen who just began his 18-week “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the 960-seat Walter Kerr Theatre. “My show is just me, the guitar, the piano and the words and music,” says Bruce. Expect some of his most famous songs and stories about them.

The B-52s, The Dives @ The Paramount
New wave icons The B-52’s helped shape the sound of ’80s alternative with classics like “Rock Lobster,” “Dance This Mess Around” and “52 Girls.” Forty years later they still bring a party.

Crocodiles, Saint Pe, Mail The Horse @ Monty Hall
They relocated back to California after years in NYC, but Crocodiles’ sound — steeped in JAMC-style feedback — remains.

Mondo NYC
The is the second year for Mondo NYC, the “music festival and tech summit” that was started by CMJ founders. While the focus is really on the industry panels, there are showcases of mostly emerging artists at venue in the Lower East Side, the East Village and a few in Williamsburg (like Why! at Brooklyn Bazaar tonight).

‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’ Live in Concert @ Lincoln Center
Lincoln Center’s Star Wars Concert Series has the NY Philharmonic playing John Williams’ classic scores live to the film. Tonight it the third in the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi.

Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theatre (two shows)
With his new Netflix specials, Jerry Seinfeld is back in the spotlight more than he’s been in years. He continues his monthly Beacon Theatre residency tonight.
