What's going on Tuesday?

Common
Common

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Common @ Prospect Park
Common has been in rap’s spotlight for over two decades now, and though not everything he does is a success, he’s put out some truly definitive material over the years. He’s been busy this year, having performed at the Oscars, released an album with a new supergroup (featuring Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins), and more. Tonight, he plays the free opening night concert for this year’s BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival season.

PRhyme, Nick Grant @ Highline Ballroom
Common isn’t the only ’90s-era rap great playing NYC tonight. The legendary DJ Premier also performs as one half of PRhyme, his project with Royce da 5’9″, who released their second album earlier this year. UPDATE: This tour has been postponed due to DJ Premier’s father’s illness.

Gordi (ft. The Tallest Man On Earth @ Baby’s All Right
Not only has Gordi played as a member of Bon Iver’s band, but she’s currently got The Tallest Man on Earth playing as a member of her band, so she continues to be in very good company. Tonight’s her third of four shows in her Baby’s All Right residency.

Everclear, Marcy Playground, Local H @ Irving Plaza
The Summerland Tour is back to bring a big dose of ’90s nostalgia, with mallternative hitmakers Everclear and Marcy Playground, plus alt-rock lifers Local H who still make solid albums today.
Hot Snakes, Vundabar, Meat Wave @ Elsewhere
There’s usually some doubt from fans when bands they love release reunion albums, but that not the case for San Diego punk greats Hot Snakes, whose new, ripping Jericho Sirens makes the 14 years since Audit In Progress feel like 14 months.

Guerilla Toss, Operator Music Band, Future Punx @ Union Pool
This is a very fun lineup of modern bands inspired by post-punk, from the chaotic clattering of Guerilla Toss, to Operator Music Band’s space age bachelor pad music, to the nu-wave sounds of Future Punx.

The B-52.s @ Ridgefield Playhouse
New wave greats The B-52’s have a deep catalog of fun party (out of bounds) anthems which they will pull from tonight.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

Earth Wind & Fire @ NJPAC
Though Earth Wind & Fire only have a few classic-lineup members left, they still put on super fun, super lively shows that are tough to deny and, of course, it’s all hits.

Dan / Joe / Charles Show @ the Shanty (79 Richardson St, Brooklyn)
The NY Distilling Company houses a low-key bar in the back of its intimidating distillery equipment, The Shanty, that just so happens to play host to this excellent meeting of three comedic minds – Joe Pera, of the excellent new Adult Swim show Joe Pera Talks With You, Charles Gould (of The Big Sick, Just For Laughs, and more), and Joe Pera co-writer Dan Licata. Pera has been one of New York’s most unlikely comedic stars, a soft-spoken, unsettlingly unflinching modern day Mr. Rogers – his new show expands on his signature, so-earnest-it-hurts stage character to reveal his daily life as a school teacher in Michigan. Episodes so far have included Pera dancing stiffly at a wedding with an adorably sheepish Jo Firestone, and most recently, Pera reading the church announcements, a perfect pairing of scripture and Pera’s unexpected love for The Who (just check it out). As if the hosts weren’t enough, this week’s lineup is fantastic, featuring Catherine Cohen (who’s headlining a sold out show at Joe’s Pub later this month, after a stint at Bonnaroo), Hari Kondabolu (Netflix Special), Joyelle Johnson (Late Night With Seth Meyers), Stavros Halkias (Cum Town), and Jono Zalay (Comedy Central). The show is totally free.

Sweet @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog’s long running stand up showcase is one of the best in New York, bringing club comics, actors, and special guests together at The Slipper Room’s unique stage for one night every week. This week’s installation features club comics like Mark Normand and Myq Kaplan, but also features new faces like Dulce Sloan (correspondent on The Daily Show), Subhah Agarwal, and Lucas Connelly. And if that weren’t enough, the show also includes a set from Frank Connie, best known for his portrayal of “TV’s Frank” on the cult classic Mystery Science Theater 3000.
