What’s going on Tuesday?

Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, and James McAlister

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, and James McAlister’s ‘Planetarium’ @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Sufjan Stevens, The National’s Bryce Dessner, contemporary composer Nico Muhly, and percussionist James McAlister came together to release the collaborative album Planetarium. With Sufjan singing lead, it’s most similar to his music, but really each musician’s individual voice shines through. They’ll bring the album to life tonight.

Common, Lion Babe @ Common Brookfield Place Plaza (Lowdown Hudson Music Fest)
Chicago rap vet Common is not the type to let America’s current political climate fly without protest, and he did just that with the release of last year’s Black America Again, released four days before the Presidential Election. He hits NYC tonight for day one of the free two-day Lowdown Hudson Music Fest. Doors are at 5 PM and the music starts at 6.

Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper @ Jones Beach
With an unmistakable rasp, Rod Stewart’s hit-making career went from the ’60s through the ’90s, Tonight he plays with ’80s star Cyndi Lauper (who’s still going strong).

Warpaint, New Myths @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Warpaint returned last year with the very good Heads Up, which had some of their poppiest material yet (like the single “New Song”). Ahead of upcoming tours with Depeche Mode, Harry Styles, and alt-j, Warpaint play a small, free Brooklyn show tonight (RSVP is closed).

Anik Khan @ Rough Trade
Queens-via-Bangladesh rapper Anik Khan injects his music with the Bengali culture he was raised with as well as the diverse sounds he heard growing up in Queens. He recently released his great Kites project, and he plays his first-ever headlining show tonight.

Mike Birbiglia @ Union Hall
While Mike Birbiglia can fill big venues these days, he still stops by Union Hall to test new material at shows he calls “Working it Out.” Sold out.

Judd Apatow @ Union Hall
Writer/director of The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Knocked Up, co-creator of Freaks and Geeks, writer on The Ben Stiller Show and The Larry Sanders Show, to name just a few of his credits, Judd Apatow is one of the most important figures in comedy of the last 20 years. Folks who got tickets will be able to catch him in stand-up form in an extremely intimate setting tonight.
