What’s going on Wednesday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Jonathan Richman, Ane Diaz @ The Bell House
The great Jonathan Richman has so many classic songs (well beyond the perfect Modern Lovers record) and is such a charming performer, he is always worth catching. This is his second of two shows with drummer Tommy Larkins.
Jawbreaker, Special Guest, Kate Willett @ Brooklyn Steel
Some thought it would never happen, but Jawbreaker finally returned for the first time in 22 years and headlined Riot Fest 2017 with a killer set that genuinely made them look like the rock stars that new documentary Don’t Break Down suggested they always could have been. Now they’re keeping the reunion going with club shows, and playing their first NYC shows since the ’90s this week. This is the third of three. Sold out.
The Zombies @ City Winery
Baroque pop as we know it might not exist without the influence of The Zombies’ Odessey & Oracle, which they played on tour last year for its 50th anniversary. Now they’re back on the road playing songs from other albums too, and also some smaller venues. They’re in NYC for three City Winery shows this week, this being the second.
Taylor Bennett, Kami, Bianca Shaw @ Gramercy Theatre
Taylor Bennett is Chance the Rapper’s brother, and if you like Chance, you’ll probably dig Taylor too — they’ve got a pretty similar sound and they collaborate with similar people (and each other).
Sevdaliza @ Le Poisson Rouge
Iranian-born, Dutch artist Sevdaliza combines a brand of minimalistic triphop with detailed visual artistry, which is clear in her music videos. (She’s been compared to both Bjork and FKA twigs.) Last year she released her debut album, Ison, and tonight she’s back in NYC in continued support of it.
Loren Connors, Matt Valentine, Alexander @ Wonders of Nature
Experimental guitar great Loren Connors leads this bill at Wonders of Nature, a new Brooklyn venue booked by former Cake Shop co-owner Andy Bodor.
Jon Batiste @ Bowery Ballroom
Best known these days as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jon Batiste is an eclectic, talented jazz musician and composer, and a renowned showman. Tonight he plays solo in the round.
Xylouris White, Jessica Moss @ Murmrr Theatre
Cretan lute player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White (of Dirty Three) have now made three collaborative records of experimental folk, most recently 2017’s Mother.
Springsteen on Broadway
Back from a much-deserved month break, The Boss is back with his Broadway show featuring some of his most famous songs and the stories behind them.
