What’s going on Wednesday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Soccer Mommy, Ratboys, Anna Altman @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Soccer Mommy’s Clean is one of the most enjoyable indie pop breakthroughs of 2018, and it’s not surprisingly been landing on lots of year-end lists. Soccer Mommy’s been touring behind it all year, and she’s now back in NYC for a two-night stand at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight and tomorrow. Well-matched direct support comes from Ratboys, who are not to miss.
Scott Hutchinson tribute w/ Julien Baker, Aaron Dessner (of The National), Kevin Devine, Craig Finn (of The Hold Steady), Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) @ Rough Trade
The indie rock world suffered a very sad loss this year with the passing of Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison. We all still miss him, and it’s going to be a very special night tonight when some of his talented peers and collaborators come together to perform his music at this show.
Yo La Tengo @ Bowery Ballroom
One of the great NYC holiday traditions, Yo La Tengo eight-night Hanukkah celebration at Bowery Ballroom continues with surprise openers, comedians and collaborators. What surprises will Night 4 bring?
ESG, Future Punx, IGBO @ Elsewhere Hall
Bronx post-punk group ESG close out their 40th anniversary year with this hometown show.
Thurston Moore, Luke Stewart, Leila Bordreuil @ The Stone
It’s night two of Thurston Moore’s residency at The Stone’s new location, and tonight he’ll be joined by jazz bassist Luke Stewart and avant-garde cellist Leila Bordreuil.
Lana Del Rey, Mitski, Regina Spektor, Rostam, Jacqueline Novak, Bleachers, Andrew Dost, Hayley Kiyoko, Sasheer Zamata, Rachel Antonoff (host) @ Town Hall (5th Ally Coalition Talent Show)
It’s the fifth edition of Jack and Rachel Antonoff’s Ally Coalition Talent show, which includes comedy and music and benefits homeless LGBTQ youth centers. As usual, there are some awesome artists lined up. Lana Del Rey recently released a few excellent collaborative songs with Jack Antonoff and she’s gearing up for a new album in 2019. Mitski released one of the most-loved 2018 albums and she just wrapped up a sold-out, four-night run at Brooklyn Steel. Regina Spektor needs no introduction at this point and it’ll be a real treat to see her share a stage with Lana and Mitski. Etc, etc.
Pharoah Sanders @ Birdland (two shows)
Free jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders was a key member of John Coltrane’s bands in the ’60s before becoming a legendary bandleader in his own right with classic albums like 1969’s Karma. He remains influential today (on Kamasi Washington and others), and this week he’s doing two shows a night at Birdland through Saturday.
Yvette, Ideal, Soren Roi, DJ Unsay @ H0L0
Brooklyn duo Yvette headline this night of heavy noise also featuring the debut performance of Ideal, the ” nu-metal/djent/trap metal trio” featuring Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy, Dion Olivier and Tyler Thacker.
2 Dope Queens @ Kings Theatre
Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson’s hit podcast, 2 Dope Queens, may be done, but it lives on as an HBO series. Season 2 tapes this week at Kings Theatre.
Janelle James Comedy Festival @ The Bell House & Union Hall
Eugene Mirman had his own comedy festival in Brooklyn for 10 years but has passed the torch to Janelle James and the fun continues tonight at The Bell House and Union Hall.
Barrie, Ghost Piss @ Union Pool
Brooklyn dream pop band Barrie have been on the rise thanks to a few promising singles. They’re set to tour opening for Miya Folick next year, but first they have some hometown shows, including this one.
Mike Cooley (of Drive-By Truckers) @ Highline Ballroom
Drive-by Truckers singer/guitarist Mike Cooley plays this “an evening with” solo show tonight.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss will soon wrap up his sold-out, year-long “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre — the last show is December 15. For those who didn’t manage to score a ticket (or didn’t want to spring for pricey tickets) his intimate show is coming to Netflix this month as a concert special.
Will Miles, Ilana Glazer, Sydnee Washington, Jaboukie Young-White, Giulia Rozzi @ Baby’s All Right
Regular Comedy presents this night with Will Miles and many of his funny friends (like Broad City‘s Ilana Glazer).
