Ty Segall & White Fence at Warsaw
Ty Segall at Warsaw earlier this year (more by P Squared)

What's going on Wednesday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Elton John @ MSG
Elton John’s very long goodbye tour treks on, and returns to the NYC-area tonight (where Elton still has a few more upcoming shows after this one). He’s been doing a spectacular show with tons of hits, and tonight is sure to be no exception.

The C.I.A. (Ty Segall & Denee Segall), Sick Head, Dog Date @ Trans-Pecos
Ty Segall and his wife, Denee, are The C.I.A., making weirdo post-punk with a drum machine. Of all of Ty’s many — many — associated projects this one may be the most art-damaged.

Westerman, Puma Blue, Kate Bollinger @ Rough Trade
UK singer-songwriter Westerman makes pretty, spare synthpop that doesn’t really pull directly from any influences, but his sad vocal style does match perfectly with the rubbery bass and crystalline synths of his song’s arrangements.

Ecstatic Music Festival w/ Bang On A Can @ Kaufman Center
Part of the 2019 Ecstatic Music Festival, it’s the annual Bang on a Can People’s Commissioning Fund Concert, which will feature premieres of works by composers Nicole Lizée, Josué Collado Fregoso, Henry Threadgill and Trevor Weston.

Kodie Shane, Baby Goth, Kilumantii, Lor Choc @ SOB’s
After a few years of EPs, singles, and a mixtape, Atlanta rapper/singer Kodie Shane put out her proper debut album Young Heartthrob in late 2018 and she’s supporting it on tour now. If you’re going, don’t miss Baltimore’s Lor Choc, who’s fresh off releasing her very catchy, proudly queer album Love Is Love.

Nothing, Tony Molina, Candy @ Asbury Park Brewery
Here’s a cool triple of bill of three acts that all share a punk spirit but sound very different: shoegazers Nothing, indie rocker Tony Molina, and hardcore crew Candy. They’re playing three NYC-area shows this week, this being the first.

Cypress Hill, Hollywood Undead @ Wellmont Theater
Veteran hip hop greats Cypress Hill are still as insane in the brain as ever. Last year they returned with their first album in eight years, Elephants on Acid, and toured in support of it, and now they’re back on the road once again.

Mat Kerekes, Jetty Bones, Jacob Sigman, Sadurn @ Mercury Lounge
Citizen frontman Mat Kerekes recently released a very Queen-like solo song, and tonight he brings his solo songs to NYC’s Mercury Lounge.

Anna of the North @ MoMA Armory Party
Norwegian indie pop artist Anna of the North recently followed her 2017 debut album Lovers with the new single “Leaning On Myself,” and she’s gearing up for her first-ever North American tour. First, she plays the MoMA Armory Party tonight.

You Had To Be There w/ Dave Hill, Jim Biederman, Jodi Lennon @ Q.E.D.
Dave HIll’s “You Had to Be There” shows (which we hear are becoming a podcast), he “gives his first person account of different periods throughout history while Jim Biederman and Jodi Lennon call bullshit on most of what he’s saying.”

Justin Vivian Bond: Under the Influence @ Joe’s Pub
JVB of Kiki & Herb and lots of other stuff tonight pays tribute to Judy Collins by way of the songs and songwriters who Collins covered: Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Sandy Denny, Jacques Brel, Duke Ellington. Stephen Sondheim, Anna McGarrigle, and so many more.
