What’s going on Wednesday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
KISS @ Madison Square Garden
KISS are saying goodbye (again), and while there’s no Ace Frehley or Peter Criss on this run, there is just about everything else you could ask for: pyrotechnics, costumes, ridiculous props, and tons of hits. The tour hits MSG tonight and returns to the NYC-area in August for shows at Prudential Center on 8/14 and Barclays Center on 8/20.
DAWN, Das Body, Jackie Mendoza @ Baby’s All Right
DAWN (aka Dawn Richard) released her great new album new breed earlier this year. It’s a very different look for her, more soulful and lively and human-sounding, and it suits her well.
Child Abuse, Psychic Graveyard, PC Worship, Controlled Bleeding, Conduit @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Noise fans take note: this show features Psychic Graveyard, the new band featuring members of Arab on Radar and Chinese Stars, as well as longrunning experimental group Controlled Bleeding.
Spiral Stairs (Pavement), Hamish Kilgour @ Brooklyn Brewery
Scott Kanneberg just released his second solo album under his old Spiral Stairs moniker and it owes more to The Cars and Tom Petty than his band Pavement, not that there’s anything wrong with that (it’s a lot of fun). He plays tonight with Hamish Kilgour whose band The Clean was certainly a big influence on Pavement.
Champagne Jerry @ Joe’s Pub
Rapper and Beastie Boys associate Champagne Jerry presents “a brand new, semi-regular show wherein Champagne Jerry is your host at a party where he and a bunch of featured artists: comedians, musicians, and people who just like champagne hang out doing the best performances you’ve ever seen in your life.”
Ava Mendoza, Nels Cline @ National Sawdust
John Zorn curated this show featuring No Wave vet Ava Mendoza and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline: “The first half of the evening will feature Mendoza playing new works for guitar and voice from composers including Trevor Dunn and Devin Hoff, and the second half will be a set of extraordinary duets played by these two spectacular guitarists.”
Dave Hill “You Had to Be There” @ Q.E.D.
For “You Had to Be There” shows (which will soon be a podcast), Dave Hill “gives his first person account of different periods throughout history while Jim Biederman and Jodi Lennon call bullshit on most of what he’s saying.”
Alison Leiby, Aparna Nancherla, Michelle Buteau, Joyelle Nicole Johnson, Ilana Glazer @ The Bell House
This is a benefit comedy show called “Night of Self(less) Care” that is raising money for Distributing Dignity, an organization that provides feminine hygiene products to women in shelters.
Billy Idol, Steve Stevens @ Town Hall
Billy Idol and his longtime guitarist/collaborator Steve Stevens are presenting this acoustic night of “hits, deeper album cuts and songs that influenced them both.”
YoshimiO, Brian Degraw, Ryan Sawyer @ Union Pool
This should be intense: Boredoms’ YoshimiO, Gang Gang Dance’s Brain Degraw and drummer Ryan Sawyer teaming up for a special trio performance.
KTL (Peter Rehberg + Stephen O’Malley), Dreamcrusher, Azonic @ (le) poisson rouge
While Sunn O))) have two albums on the way this year, Stephen O’Malley is first playing some rare shows with KTL (his collaboration with Peter Rehberg). They just played Big Ears Festival this past weekend and they’re hitting NYC tonight.
Lucifer, Spell, Sanhedrin @ Saint Vitus
Two retro heavy metal/hard rock bands, Germany’s Lucifer and Canada’s Spell, are on the road together, and tonight they’re hitting Brooklyn with likeminded local support from Sanhedrin.
Choker @ Rough Trade
Michigan singer/rapper/producer Choker has been on the rise, and he’s currently supporting his catchy sophomore album Honeybloom on tour. Tonight’s show is sold out.
