2020 Tibet House Benefit @ Carnegie Hall
It’s the 33rd annual Tibet House US Benefit, which always brings out an amazing array of talent to Carnegie Hall. As usual, the legend Philip Glass has curated the lineup which this year includes Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson, Bettye LaVette and Margo Price — who have all played previous benefits — plus Jesse Paris Smith, The National’s Matt Berninger, and first-timer Phoebe Bridgers. Fingers crossed Pheobe and Matt will perform their collaborative song “Walking on a String”. These shows are always a great experience and a great excuse to make it to the historic venue.
Insect Ark, Gnaw @ Saint Vitus
It’s a joint release show for Insect Ark and Gnaw. Insect Ark — whose current lineup is band leader (and Swans collaborator) Dana Schechter and former SubRosa drummer Andy Patterson — are releasing their gloomy new album The Vanishing this Friday via Profound Lore, and Gnaw (who Dana is also playing in) are celebrating their recently-released Barking Orders EP.
Desolation Center screening w/ Lee Ranaldo & Steve Shelley Q&A @ IFC Center
New documentary Desolation Center tells “the untold story of a series of early ’80s guerrilla music and art performance happenings in Southern California that paved the way for Burning Man, Lollapalooza, and Coachella… Collective experiences that have become key elements of popular culture in the 21st century” and features interviews with Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic and more. SY’s Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A.
Daniel Romano, Dark Tea @ The Sultan Room
Genre-defying Canadian singer Daniel Romano has explored just about every subgenre of folk and alt-country, and releases albums at an astonishing clip, though it’s been a couple years since Human Touch and Nerveless, both of which came out in 2018. Local band Dark Tea make for a very nice lead-in.
Alice Cohen & The Ch. 14 Weather Team, Andy Aylward, Transistor Ray @ Union Pool
New York songwriter, musician, and visual artist Alice Cohen has been making records since the late-’70s, led The Vels in the ’80s, Die Monster Die in the ’90s, and most recently released Artificial Fairytales with her backing band The Channel 14 Weather Team.
Pop Show: The Festival @ The Bell House
Ziwe Fumudoh is “a ‘pop star.’ She’s invited some of the city’s best comedians to perform original pop songs (and pop presentations!) so they can be ‘pop stars’ together” including Jo Firestone, Larry Owens, Max Wittert, Megan Stalter
Glass Animals @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
With drummer Joe Seaward recovered from his 2018 near-fatal cycling accident, UK band Glass Animals are making up for lost time.
