What's going on Wednesday?

Destruction Unit
Destruction Unit at Union Pool, 2015 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Destruction Unit, Suburbanite, Haram, Sunken Cheek, Flysch @ Market Hotel
Destruction Unit are as psychedelic as they are heavy, and they can hit breakneck speeds but they know how to slow it down too. They’re one of the best current live bands in underground rock, and every time you see them is truly a different experience. Highly recommended show.

Monika, Humeysha @ Baby’s All Right
Greek singer Monika, who is a pop star in her native land, made 2015’s Secret in the Dark in Brooklyn with members of the Daptone family, giving it their authentic touch to what is a widely disparate, often very engaging record.

Telegram @ Baby’s All Right
If The Undertones came out of Wales instead of Ireland and were produced by Brian Eno, it might sound a bit like UK group Telegram. There are some early Super Furry Animals vibes going on on their debut LP, Operator, as well. This is a free show, doors at midnight.

Summer Heart, Teeel @ Knitting Factory
Göteborg, Sweden’s David Alexander has been releasing records as Summer Heart since 2009 and he’s got an airy, melodic style that isn’t too far away from fellow Swedes The Radio Department or The Legends.

Beach House (Installation) @ Knockdown Center
Having just played three nights at Webster Hall last week, Beach House are back with these two arty “installation” shows at Knockdown Center where they’ll play as a two-piece. Should be interesting. Sold out.

A-Wa, The Sway Machinery @ Le Poisson Rouge
Israeli sister trio A-Wa are a band who, in their own words, “combine Yemenite folk singing with electronic dance music.” This is their NYC debut.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.

Daphni (DJ Set) @ Output
Dan Snaith is best known for the psychedelic pop he makes as Caribou, but he also makes more heady dance music as Daphni. Tonight he DJs Output under that moniker.

ARMS, Drawing Boards, Ricky Lewis @ Union Pool
Onetime Harlem Shakes guitarist Todd Goldstein has been making music as ARMS for a good while now and is set to release his third album, Patterns, later this spring. Get an early taste tonight, along with a set from Drawing Boards (ex Dirty on Purpose/Sisters/Darlings).

Death By Unga Bunga, Les Bicyclettes Blanches @ Mercury Lounge
Norway’s Death by Unga Bunga have been around since the start of this decade, making infectious racket that recalls late ’60s Britpop and mid-’00s garage.

Risk! feat. Kevin Allison, Adam Lowitt, Arthur Meyer, Andrew Ritchie, Livia Scott, Bowen Yang @ Bell House
“RISK!” is a live show and podcast created and hosted by Kevin Allison (MTV’s The State, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Reno 911!, etc), where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share.

Freedy Johnston @ Rockwood Music Hall
Singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston has been part of the Hoboken/NYC scene for just about 30 years and his low key (if somewhat caustic) style gets better with age.
