What's going on Wednesday?

Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden in Austin, 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Iron Maiden, The Raven Age @ Madison Square Garden
Metal legends Iron Maiden returned last year with The Book of Souls, which is an ambitious double album that has the band still in fine form (Maiden’s recent material is stronger than that of most ’80s-era bands). Going by recent setlists, we should get some classics tonight too.

Weezer, Big Data (DJ) @ Warsaw
While Weezer have a massive tour this summer (with some questionable support acts), it’ll be a lot more fun to see them in an intimate environment like tonight’s Warsaw show. Not surprisingly, this is sold out.

Crowbar, Unearthly Trance, Manipulate @ Saint Vitus
NOLA sludge greats Crowbar last released Symmetry in Black in 2014, their tenth album, and recent shows have been stacked with favorites from all throughout their career.

Big Boi (DJ set), TM88 (DJ set), Christian Rich @ Output
There’s no question that OutKast’s Big Boi knows how to party, so if he’s on the boards at Output tonight, it’s likely gonna be a good time.

Gogol Bordello @ Starland Ballroom
Everyone’s favorite band of gypsy punks have been celebrating the tenth anniversary of Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike by playing it in full on tour. They already did in NYC on New Year’s Eve, and tonight they’ll do it at the nearby Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ.

Stove, Vaadat Charigim, Peaer, Doubting Thomas Cruise Control @ Palisades
Burger-approved shoegazers Vaadat Charigim are in town from Israel, so don’t miss them while you have the chance. They sounded good at SXSW.

Pupppy, Caged Animals, Varsity, ROMP @ Shea Stadium
New Brunswick poppy punks ROMP recently released their addictive debut LP Departure From Venus and have been playing a few local-ish shows in support of it. Tonight’s another, and it’s also worth catching Chicago indie pop band Varsity.

Holy Holy @ City Winery (David Bowie tribute rehearsal)
Ahead of the two big David Bowie tributes at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall is this rehearsal show, which is mostly for backing band Holy Holy (featuring Tony Visconti) but also you never know who may show up. Sold out.

Faust, J.R. Bohannon, Greg Fox @ Market Hotel
Market Hotel’s industrial warehouse vibes seem like a great place to see krautrock legends Faust. This is the final of their three area shows.

Deradoorian, Troublemakers, Sensual X, Wahs Salgoud @ Union Pool
This is the makeup show for the last of Deradorrian’s Union Pool residency shows, featuring “sweet, heavy, psychedelic, groovin jams from over the years of rockin music.”

PitchBlak Brass Band @ National Sawdust
Brooklyn’s hip hop jazz band PitchBlak Brass Band will be premiering and performing a short silent film documenting their time on the road as part of the #BlakHypeTour2016.

Yak, The Mystery Lights, Breanna Barbara @ Berlin
Yak’s chaotic live shows and dark garagey sound have garnered comparisons to The Birthday Party and The Cramps (also: Thee Oh Sees or Fat White Family). Tonight they’ll play with Brooklyn’s finest garage rockers, The Mystery Lights.

Infamous Stringdusters feat. Nicki Bluhm, Della Mae @ Bowery Ballroom
The Infamous Stringdusters hearken back to old timey bluegrass while Nicki Bluhm is more of an alt-country singer, and sometimes they bring their two sounds together for collaborations. Tonight’s their first of two NYC shows on this tour.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
