Robyn Hitchcock & Yo La Tengo @ Bowery Ballroom
Onetime Soft Boys frontman Robyn Hitchcock made his solo debut with 1981’s Black Snake Diamond Röle, a stone-cold psychedelic pop classic, and cuts like “The Man Who Invented Himself,” “Acid Bird,” “I Watch the Cars” and “Do Policeman Sing?” still sound great 35 years later. He’s playing it in full, with Yo La Tengo as his backing band, and If he wants to throw in some songs from his terrific forthcoming album, that’s ok by us.
Grandaddy, Maybird @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Grandaddy‘s comeback album, Last Place, is out this week and finds Jason Lytle and crew picking up right where they left off over a decade ago. The band’s easygoing style, fuzzy guitars, arpeggiating synths and Lytle’s world weary vocals, is ageless and Lytle’s lyrical themes of alienation in a world of creeping urban development and technological advances, seem more pertinent than ever. This is the second of four (!) NYC release shows this week.
Run The Jewels, The Gaslamp Killer, Gangsta Boo, Nick Hook, Cuz @ Terminal 5
Killer Mike and El-P are both bigger than ever thanks to Run the Jewels, who recently released their excellent third album as a surprise Christmas gift. They’re on tour now, and tonight they wrap up a four-night run at Terminal 5.
Aaron West & the Roaring Twenties, Empty Houses, Dryjacket @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Wonder Years singer Dan Campbell makes folkier music as Aaron West & the Roaring Twenties (think Weakerthans, Mountain Goats, etc). This show is sold out, and if you’re going, it’s worth getting there early for emo revival-y openers Dryjacket. BV editor Andrew Sacher will also be DJing between sets.
ZZ Top, Austin Hanks @ Beacon Theatre
Going strong for 45 years or so, Texas rock trio ZZ Top are currently on their ‘Tonnage’ Tour. Says Billy Gibbons, “We’ve been at this long enough that we’re starting to get good. Come and see us; it’s gonna be loud and live.”
Kodak Black @ Playstation Theater
Florida rapper Kodak Black has really been taking off since the release of his 2016 mixtape Lil B.I.G. Pac (home of his addictive PnB Rock collab “Too Many Years”). He’s opening the upcoming Future tour, but first he’s on a headlining tour that hits NYC tonight.
Tim Kasher, Yohuna @ Union Pool
Cursive frontman Tim Kasher releases his new solo album No Resolution this week, and longtime fans of Tim’s moody songwriting should dig this one right away. Before it’s officially out, he plays this intimate NYC show with quality opener Yohuna.
Greg Graffin (of Bad Religion) @ Rockwood Music Hall
Bad Religion singer Greg Graffin releases his first solo album in 11 years next week, but first he’s previewing it by playing the new material at some shows (he’s also been playing some solo oldies and some Bad Religion). This is his third of three shows at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall.
You Blew It!, All Get Out, Free Throw @ Brooklyn Bazaar
After doing the Kinsella-style emo thing for a few years, You Blew It! went into more atmospheric territory on last year’s Abendrot, their first album for Triple Crown and best one yet.
Brooklyn is Motown feat. Nigel Hall Band with special guests The Dap-Kings Horns + Corey Glover (Living Colour) + more! @ Brooklyn Bowl
A pretty impressive lineup comes together at Brooklyn Bowl tonight to perform Marvin Gaye’s ultra-classic What’s Going On in full.
Wild Pink, The Royal They, Dead Painters, Your Dog @ Trans-Pecos
NYC’s Wild Pink make atmospheric, earthy, humbly-recorded indie rock that recalls a handful of mid-’90s to mid-’00s bands (they’ve gotten a few American Analog Set comparisons). Last week, they released their self-titled debut album on Tiny Engines.
The Joy Formidable (acoustic), Phoebe Bridgers @ Le Poisson Rouge
The Joy Formidable are currently on their acoustic tour, and if you’re going to the NYC show tonight, we recommend showing up on time for LA folk singer (and Ryan Adams collaborator) Phoebe Bridgers.
Potty Mouth, Party Baby, Tennis System, Stove @ Baby’s All Right
Among the acts on this bill are Potty Mouth and Stove, two bands who have been doing the ’90s rock revival thing for a few years now.
Manolo Rose, Kris Kasanova, Drew Baby , Will North, Dyme-A-Duzin @ SOB’s
Brooklyn rapper Manolo Rose recently signed to Memphis Bleek’s Warehouse Music Group, and he recalls the era of New York rap when Bleek was on the charts. (He recently dropped a single with Harlem’s Dave East, who also recalls that era.) Tonight he headlines Hustle Palooza at SOB’s.
