AC/DC: Let There Be Rock screening @ Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg
BrooklynVegan is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Music Driven signature film series at Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. This month’s title is a record of AC/DC’s last tour with Bon Scott, and combines concert footage with interview material and fantasy/filmed sequences. From the film’s description: “Along the way, we hear about the songwriting process, playing live, and living the rock star dream. It’s all so very drunken and delightful.”
Swet Shop Boys, Jubilee x Dre Skull (Mixpack b2b), Donmonique, Anik Khan @ Webster Hall
Swet Shop Boys is former Das Racist member Heems and rapper/actor Riz Ahmed (who’s in The Night Of, Rogue One, and more), and their 2016 debut album Cashmere is full of politically-charged jams.
Michael Hurley @ Union Pool
’60s-era outsider folk musician Michael Hurley remains active and getting to see him is a real treat. This week he plays two-sold out shows at Union Pool, this being the first.
Sallie Ford, Molly Burch @ The Bell House
Sallie Ford and Molly Burch are on tour together now in support of two new, quite different albums. Sallie’s is the roots-rockin’ Soul Sick on Vanguard and Molly’s is the folky, dreamy Please Be Mine on Captured Tracks.
Kero Kero Bonito, SahBabii, Juliana Huxtable @ NYU Kimmel Center
KKB’s debut album is a big chunk of bubblegum in a shiny, shiny wrapper, but it’s one with some bitter bite in the form of the tongue-in-cheek lyrics (which flit back and forth between English and Japanese). There are odes to post-Graduation “what now?” fears, the joys of unashamedly doing nothing, social media obsession and more current affairs — all to the tune of glittery, Euro-style electropop.
Hot Chip (DJ), Mike Simonetti @ Output
You never know exactly which mamebers of Hot Chip you may get for one of their DJ nights, but seeing how LCD Soundsystem just played five nights at Brooklyn Steel, we’re going to bet Al Doyle will be one of them tonight.
John Davis and the Cicadas, Low Ways, Marble Fawn @ Cape House
You may know John Davis as one half of Folk Implosion (Lou Barlow being the other half). He left the group (and music in a public way) in 2000, not reemerging till 2015 with Spare Parts. He’s gearing up for a new record, El Pulpo, which was inspired by Raj Patel’s book Stuffed and Starved, as well as similar texts on corporate greed, Big Agriculture, the stock market, and other pressing issues.
Charli XCX @ Le Poisson Rouge
While Charli XCX has always kept an alternative edge to her pop music, she’s also fully crossed over into mainstream pop and produced some genuine hits. Tonight, though, she plays a much more intimate show than usual.
Maggie Rogers, JIL @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Speaking of alt-pop, buzz artist Maggie Rogers continues to get more and more popular. If you still haven’t seen what all the buzz is about, you can check out one of her two NYC shows this week (this is the first).
