What's going on Wednesday?

Coachella 2017
Whitney at Coachella 2017 (more by Charles Reagan Hackleman)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Whitney, Natalie Prass @ Brooklyn Steel
It’s been a year since Whitney released their debut album, Light Upon the Lake, and the Chicago-based band continue to get bigger as witnessed by this, their biggest NYC show yet. If you’re going to this sold-out show, do get there early for Natalie Prass.

Kevin Morby, John Andrews & The Yawns @ Bowery Ballroom
Kevin’s new album, City Music, takes him into more Velvet Underground territory, a direction that suits his lyrical an vocal style well. The album’s not out for a couple weeks but he’s likely to play a bunch of songs tonight (and maybe even have the record at the merch table).

Pixies, Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Webster Hall
The Kim Deal-less version of the Pixies begin a three-night run in NYC tonight. If you’re going, don’t miss Cymbals Eat Guitars, one of the better modern bands who hearken back to the era of indie rock that the Pixies helped pioneer.

Alabama Shakes @ The Intrepid
The increasingly-popular modern blues rockers Alabama Shakes are playing a couple small, last-minute shows in NYC this week. This is the first, a free Sailor Jerry-presented Fleet Week kickoff event.

Xasthur, Johanna Warren, Dreadlords @ Saint Vitus
Xasthur released his last metal album back in 2010, but main member Malefic revived the moniker more recently as an acoustic project. Last year he released the acoustic album Subject to Change. Opening this tour is folk singer Johanna Warren, whose haunting sound should pair well with a metal-turned-acoustic band.

Conan, North, False Gods @ Knitting Factory
Maryland Deathfest is this weekend, which means tons of great metal bands are stopping in NYC before and after. One is the great UK doom band Conan, who are on tour with Arizona sludge band North.

Flogging Molly, White Buffalo, Dylan Walshe @ Irving Plaza
Celtic punk staples Flogging Molly are gearing up to release the new album Life Is Good this June, and they’re on tour ahead of its release. Their live shows are a Guinness-fueled good time, but also precise and powerful. This is night 2 of 2 at Irving Plaza.

‘A Night of Nasty’ w/ Joan as Police Woman, Jo Firestone, Lauren Adams, Buzz Off Lucille, Lily Du, MIXTAPE Cover Band, Batala New York, DJ Juice E @ 501 Union Street
Joan as Policewoman, and many more will perform tonight at this Planned Parenthood benefit. It’s all for a good cause…and includes an open bar.
