What's going on Wednesday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
The New Pornographers, Waxahatchee @ Terminal 5
The New Pornographers’ new album Whiteout Conditions (and this tour) is without Dan Bejar, but Carl Newman, Neko Case, Kathryn Calder & co. still offer up plenty of addictive pop songs. It’s a great record and any chance to see them is one worth taking. Tonight’s got a great opener too, Waxahatchee (in duo form), who just announced their own new album, Out in the Storm. Tickets are available.
Bryce Dessner & Nico Muhly @ Carnegie Hall
1/2 of the new 4AD-signed group that is releasing a “Planetarium” album on 4AD (and headlining Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park in the process) are playing a show curated by Steve Reich (who will be in attendance and talking) at Carnegie Hall. You may also recognize Bryce as a member of The National.
Goldfrapp, Corbu @ Brooklyn Steel
After making the somber, orchestral Tales of Us, Goldfrapp are back on glammy electro terra firma with the just-released ‘Silver Eye.’ This is Goldfrapp’s first of two nights at Brooklyn Steel (tickets for both nights are available)
Split Single, R. Ring, Isa Chandra Moskowitz @ Baby’s All Right
Jason Narducy’s band Split Single released Metal Frames back in November which is loaded with punky, poppy, anthemic rock not unlike some of the other folks Narducy also plays with (Superchunk, Bob Mould). Also on the bill: R. Ring one half of which is Kelly Deal of The Breeders.
Juliana Hatfield, Laura Stevenson @ Mercury Lounge
The former Blake Babies frontwoman releases her new solo album, Pussycat, this week which was all written after Donald Trump got elected. “All of these songs just started pouring out of me,” Hatfield says. “I felt an urgency to record them, to get them down, and get them out there.” This is the first of two consecutive nights at Mercury Lounge.
L.A. Witch, Brian Merrill @ Berlin
With a name that seems almost like an intentional troll, LA Witch sound pretty much like you’d expect (gothy garage) and do it well.
Diana Ross @ New York City Center
As a staple of Motown’s early ’60s era, the disco era, and plenty of the in-between, the legendary Diana Ross can sing just about anything. This is night three of her five-show run at the New York City Center.
21 Savage, Young M.A., Young Nudy, Tee Grizzley, Anthony Somebody @ Irving Plaza
Last year, 21 Savage picked up a lot of buzz for his collab mixtape with Metro Boomin, Savage Mode, and Young M.A. did too for her addictive, “OOOUUU,” New York’s rap hit of the summer. They’re on tour together now, and this is their first of two nights at Irving Plaza.
Mike Birbiglia: Just the Tips @ The Bell House
The hilarious Mike Birbiglia normally tests out his new jokes with his ‘Working It Out’ shows at Union Hall. Due to the recent fire at Union Hall, he’s moving things over to The Bell House tonight, and proceeds will benefit the Union Hall bartenders who aren’t making any tips while that venue is closed (hence the show’s title, ‘Just the Tips’).
Brian Wilson Presents Pet Sounds @ Palace Theatre (Albany)
Last year, Beach Boy Brian Wilson took his classic album Pet Sounds on tour (with help from classic-era BB members Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin) for its 50th anniversary. This year, he’s doing one more tour of the album and he says it’s the last one. He plays Albany tonight, and hits Newark on Friday.
