Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Peter Wolf @ Forest Hills Stadium
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are celebrating their 40th anniversary on tour this year, and as you can probably guess, they’re packing their setlists with favorites from all over their career. Tonight’s their first of two shows at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium.

Phish @ Madison Square Garden
Phish are on night four of their “Baker’s Dozen” run at MSG. Each show has a different flavored donut to go with it, and themed songs to match the flavor throughout their sets.

TR/ST, Police Des Moeurs @ House of Yes
While we won’t get a new TR/ST album till 2018, Robert Alfons’ gothy pop project did release a new single, “Bicep,” this summer and has more than enough bangers in his stable to keep things going all night.

Mbongwana Star @ (le) poisson rouge
Congolese band Mbongwana Star made a splash with their debut album, From Kinasha, which is a joyous representation of their “new style” sound, self-described as “space ipno afro punk rock electro !!! style.” If you dig Konono No.1 (who feature on album highlight “Malukayi”) or William Onyeabor, this could be for you.

Rickie Lee Jones (performing “Pirates”), Ronnie Spector, Nona Hendryx, Torres, Alynda Segarra (Hurray for the Riff Raff), Lizzo, Gaby Moreno @ Lincoln Center/Damrosch Park Bandshell
In celebration of NPR’s new ‘150 Greatest Albums by Women’ list, a bunch of cool artists are coming together to perform music from the list. Rickie Lee Jones, who’s playing her own Pirates (#49 on the list) in full, is on first at 7 PM with the rest of the lineup following at 8:30 PM.

Sylvan Esso, Middle Kids @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Pop-indie duo Sylvan Esso returned this year with the new album What Now?, and they’ve been bringing their super energetic live show on the road all year. Tonight they’re back in NYC for a big outdoor show.

Music For Enophiles are a Brian Eno tribute act who stick mainly to his solo pop recordings from 1974-1977. Tonight’s show has a couple Hoboken indie vets, Richard Barone (The Bongos) and Glenn Morrow (The Individuals).

Soul Asylum, Cracker @ The Capitol Theatre
Nineties alt-rock reigns supreme tonight as Soul Asylum and Cracker get low on a runaway train.

Witch Taint, Dave Hill, Phil Costello @ Union Hall
In 2004 comedian, musician and gadabout Dave Hill created alter-ego Lance, a teenager living with his parents in Gary, IN who also happened to be the lead singer and sole member of “the most extreme, brutal, and Satanic black metal band of all-time,” There’s a lot more to this story, and you can hear it all — and see Witch Taint live — tonight.

Marlon Williams, Julia Jacklin, The Weather Station, Joshua Hedley @ Union Pool
We’re fans of two of the artists on this bill: Australia’s Julia Jacklyn, and Canada’s The Weather Station.

RISK! with Kevin Allison, Matt Koff, Andy Christie, Mike Brown, Chloe Hilliard, Amy Oestreicher @ The Bell House

Hans Zimmer @ Radio City Music Hall
Composer Hans Zimmer is one of the most in-demand, innovative in the business, having scored most of Christopher Nolan’s films (including the just-released Dunkirk), the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Gladiator, The Thin Red Line, The Lion King, and lots more. Tonight’s show he’ll play selections from his most popular film scores, which will also feature “guests from the rock and pop world” as well as a light show designed by Marc Brickman (Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails).

Crobot, Royal Thunder @ Saint Vitus
Crobot headline this show, and if you’re going, we recommend showing up early for hard rockers Royal Thunder too.

Offa Rex (The Decemberists and Olivia Chaney ) @ Town Hall
The Decemberists and Olivia Chaney recently teamed up for a collaborative album as Offa Rex, which mostly includes folk-rock renditions of traditional British folk songs in the tradition of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, etc. If you dig that kinda stuff, Offa Rex do a really great job.

Football, Etc, Wild Pink @ Goldsounds
Revivalists of Kinsella-style emo (down to the Football-referencing band name), Football, etc return to Brooklyn tonight for a show at Goldsounds. Opening is local Tiny Engines-signed indie rockers Wild Pink.
