Insecure Men, Roya, R Jakob Bovden (Night Beats) @ Baby’s All Right
Saul Adamczewski was a guiding force in Fat White Family but is now making music as Insecure Men which, if vaguely Hawaiian sounding debut track “Subaru Nights” is any indication, is miles away from FWF’s gutter garage. They just played Meltasia and bring the fun to Baby’s tonight.
Adam Ant, Glam Skanks @ Beacon Theatre
Having already toured the U.S. once already this year (where he played Kings of the Wild Frontier in full), Adam Ant is back again on the “Anthems: The Singles” tour. This show should literally be all hits.
Aldous Harding, Aerial East, Ancient Ocean @ Bowery Ballroom
New Zealand’s Aldous Harding released her excellent John Parish-produced 4AD debut Party earlier this year, which really showcases her range as a singer and songwriter. Her riveting live show is not to be missed.
HR (of Bad Brains), Kingsound Vibration @ Brooklyn Bowl
HR will be playing with Bad Brains this weekend at Riot Fest in Chicago, but plays this solo show tonight.
Norah Jones @ Le Poisson Rouge
Norah Jones, who released Day Breaks earlier this year, continues her five night run at Le Poisson Rouge where she’s backed by drummer Brian Blade and bassist Chris Thomas.
Public Service Broadcasting, Surf Rock is Dead @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
UK group Public Service Broadcasting blended elclectic rock and samples from educational films and newsreels on their first two albums. They’re still doing that but added actual singing (courtesy Tracyanne Campbell of Camera Obscura, James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers, and more) on new LP, Every Valley. Their live show is an A/V spectacular.
Protomartyr, Pill, Bodega @ Saint Vitus Bar
Protomartyr’s fourth album, Relatives in Descent, is out next week which pummels both sonically and lyrically. Get an early taste tonight with skronky postpunk band PIll as the undercard.
Dear Nora, gobbinjr, Nicholas Krgovich @ Silent Barn
For most of the 2000s, Portland/San Francisco-based musician Katy Davidson led the lo-fi project Dear Nora. Katy and her revolving Dear Nora lineup (which at one point included Dave Longstreth) put out a handful of records during their initial run as a band, retiring the moniker in 2008. Katy re-activated Dear Nora earlier this year to tour in support of the reissue of 2004’s Mountain Rock.
James Blake (solo piano) @ The Appel Room (Jazz at Lincoln Center)
Though James Blake is often known as an electronic artist, he shines as a piano-pop singer/songwriter too, and he’ll show off that side at these two intimate shows at one of the most spectacular venue settings in NYC.
Chris Thile, Brad Mehldau @ Town Hall
Pianist Brad Mehldau and mandolinist (and A Prairie Home Companion host) Chris Thile released a collaborative album earlier this year, featuring a mix of originals and covers.
Male Gaze, Russian Baths, Vic Thrill @ Union Pool
San Francisco’s trio Male Gaze released their third album for Castle Face, Miss Takes, earlier this summer. If you like your punk (or post punk) with a wash of gothy glamour and just a touch of surf, you will most certainly dig this. (Think: early-’80s The Damned, Iceage or even Dan Boeckner’s many bands.)
Dead Cross, Secret Chiefs 3 @ Gramercy Theatre
Dead Cross is the new hardcore supergroup of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle), Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer), Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox), and Michael Crain (Retox), and their music is as killer as it sounds on paper. They’re in NYC tonight for their second of two shows with another Mr. Bungle-related band, Secret Chiefs 3.
Prince Paul @ C’mon Everybody
Legendary hip hop producer, dean of Handsome Boy Modeling School, Brookzil! member, and all-around cool cat, Prince Paul celebrates the release of new LP Itstrumental with help from DJ J-Zone, Edan The DJ, MC Paul Barman, Thanksgiving Brown, and Monihan.
Ne-Hi, Honduras, GYMSHORTS @ ALPHAVILLE
Chicago band Ne-Hi’s sound — a dirty jangle with punctuating guitar leads that sometimes follow singer Jason Balla vocals — is pop at heart but informed by spiky post punk.
Overkill, Crowbar, Havok, Black Fast, Invidia @ Irving Plaza
The 2017 Metal Alliance Tour rolls into NYC tonight with a great lineup, including Jersey thrash vets Overkill (who released their 18th album The Grinding Wheel this year), NOLA sludge vets Crowbar (who released the very good The Serpent Only Lies last year), thrash revivalists Havok, and more.
Inquisition, UADA, Volahn, Mutilation Rites @ Gramercy Theatre
Black metal vets Inquisition are back in NYC and they’ve got some pretty great openers with them who are not to miss.
