What's going on Wednesday?

Julien Baker at SXSW 2016
Julien Baker at SXSW 2016 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, Petal @ Bowery Ballroom
This sold-out show has a great lineup all around with quickly-rising singer/songwriter Julien Baker, her likeminded tourmate Phoebe Bridgers, and Scranton, PA indie rockers Petal.

True Widow, Drab Majesty @ Saint Vitus
The slow, sad band True Widow call their genre “stonegaze,” which should give you a pretty solid idea of how they sound. Tonight’s show is sold out.

GoGo Penguin @ Le Poisson Rouge
UK trio GoGo Penguin are an entirely acoustic band, but they use their instruments to try to recreate the sounds of electronic music. It’s no coincidence that their artwork looks a lot like James Blake’s.

Mass Gothic, Grooms, Tiny Hazard @ Baby’s All Right
The brains behind Hooray For Earth,Noel Heroux rebranded himself Mass Gothic but still making soaring synthpop. If you’re going tonight, get there in time for Grooms who blend Sonic Youth-style guitar noise with krauty rhythms.

Starchild and The New Romantic, Elijah Wolf @ Knitting Factory
If you’re missing Prince, and looking for someone who is channeling his vibe in a modern, way, Starchild may be your dish. He’s played with Blood Orange, Solange, and Chairlift, and his band is tight. They throw in covers, too, and getting a Purple one doesn’t seem out of the question.

The Symptoms @ Market Hotel
The great Laurie Anderson plays this Brooklyn DIY venue tonight as part of improvisational trio The Symptoms that also includes Kid Millions (Oneida, etc) and Tony Diodore.

Ice Balloons, Kyp Malone, Robert Aiki, Audre Lowe & DJ Josh Dwyer @ Union Pool
Filmmaker and musician Aaron Aites, who made the great black metal doc Until The Light, has been battling aggressive kidney cancer, and all proceeds from this benefit go to his medical bills. Kyp Malone’s side project Ice Balloons headline.

Billy Connolly @ Beacon Theatre
Many folks remember Billy Connolly as the Scottish guy with the wild gray-white hair who took over for Howard Hesseman as the teacher on the sitcom Head of the Class (and its subsequent, less successful spin-off Billy). But Connolly is more than a standup comedian; he’s an actor, a musician, a TV presenter and an artist. It’s a rare chance to see him tonight.

Doug Loves Movies @ Gramercy Theatre
Cineaste and weed enthusiast Doug Benson brings a live taping of his movie-themed podcast — involving games and famous funny friends – to Gramercy Theatre.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.

Bridget Everett & the Tender Moments @ Joe’s Pub
Following the success of her show ‘Rock Bottom,’ Bridget Everett returns with her band The Tender Moments to “sing all her favorite love songs and share the stories of the men that made her…feel?”

Graham Parker w/ Brinsley Schwarz @ City Winery
Pub rock and new wave icon, raconteur and great songwriter, Graham Parker plays tonight with his frequent collaborator Brinsley Schwarz (whose own titular band had Nick Lowe in it).
